U.S. Embassy in Malta

During America’s Revolutionary War, nearly two thousand Maltese nationals and Knights of the Order of St. John fought alongside George Washington’s forces in America’s War of Independence.

Local metalworker and Maltese John Pass (Pace) and Pennsylvanian John Stow recast the Liberty Bell, an iconic symbol of American independence that today sits in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

August 15, 1942, represented a crucial moment in Maltese history when five out of the 14 vessels that formed part of “Operation Pedestal,” including the American tanker SS Ohio, broke through the Nazi blockade of Malta to deliver fuel and food to the starving population.

The United States and Malta established full diplomatic relations immediately after Malta gained independence from Britain in 1964, and the first U.S. Embassy opened in Valletta that same year.

The United States and Malta have long maintained cordial and constructive diplomatic relations.
