Writing marathon
Oct. 23rd, 2004 06:19 pmOur local NoVa Nano group hosted a Nano prep writing marathon at Common Grounds, our last before it changes names to Murky Coffee. I'm a little nervous to see what happens to place, especially how they mention moving some of the chairs and sofas around. As long as the wireless stays there, though, I'll probably be around. The group saw quite a few new people, which was good to see. I was amused to discover I was the only two time Nano winner in the group, which I hadn't realized until that point.
Mostly we played around with different outlining and plotting methods to see what worked. Notecards were used and ideas were bandied about. I'm still doing well with my "plot the first four and then see what happens" method myself. I have certain images and scenes I definitely want to include. It's just the nitty gritty details about the mystery storyline that worry me.
One Nanoer mentioned a rather helpful rough guide posted on the board. The poster admitted they had left off a zero on one of the sections, so it breaks down thusly:
3000 words - teaser and exposition
10000 words - catalyst
7000 words - exploration of story world - new characters, new nuggets of information, prep for conflict
15000 words - things go BAD!
5000 words - hit them with an even bigger quest, up the ante
5000 words - characters defeat challenges and change
5000 words - resolution
