Escape from Tarkov — 5.45×39 rounds pt.3

The first article of this series is available here: Escape from Tarkov ― Ammo History

■ Is 5.45 Really a Special Round?

As we have seen so far,
the 5.45×39 round is ammunition built around a distinctive design philosophy.
It is light, low in recoil, and easy to handle.
And it causes damage through its behavior after impact.
But this raises an important question.
Is this round really something unique?

■ A World That Reached the Same Conclusion

In reality, the answer is almost the opposite.
The 5.45 is not unique in itself.
It is simply one of several answers the world arrived at in response to the same problem.

■ The Western Answer: 5.56

  • emphasis on hit probability and controllability

  • damage through high velocity

■ The Eastern Answer: 5.45

  • emphasis on controllability and post-impact behavior

  • damage through instability after impact

The approaches were different,
but the goal was the same.
To keep landing hits.

■ Why Did the World Move Toward Small, Fast Rounds?

This did not happen by accident.

■ Reason 1: The Reality of Combat Distance

  • most combat happens at short range

  • extreme long-range performance is often excessive

■ Reason 2: The Importance of Hit Probability

  • even a powerful round means little if it does not hit

  • recoil reduces the ability to land repeated shots

■ Reason 3: Sustained Fighting Capability

  • lighter rounds mean more can be carried

  • more ammunition means the soldier can stay in the fight longer

■ What the Evolution of Ammunition Actually Changed

The important point here is this:
it was not only the ammunition that changed.
The way of fighting changed with it.

■ The Older Logic

If it hits, it stops the target.

■ The Modern Logic

Keep hitting until the target is stopped.

■ So Is 5.45 Inferior?

That question does not really mean much.
It is not that 5.56 is superior,
or that 5.45 is inferior.
They are simply the results of optimization under different conditions.

■ Why Is 5.56 More Widely Used?

On a global scale,
5.56 is often seen as the dominant standard.
The reasons are simple:

  • alliance structures such as NATO

  • standardized logistics

  • weapon exports

In other words,
this is not mainly a matter of performance.
It is a matter of structure.

■ And Yet the Core Principle Has Not Changed

Looking back over all of this,
one shared truth becomes visible.
What ammunition is ultimately converging on is not merely

  • power

  • penetration

  • accuracy

but rather
how to deliver hits effectively.

■ In One Sentence

Small-caliber high-velocity ammunition is not a weakened form of the rifle round.
It is an optimized answer to the problem of hitting the target.

The background ideas and actual gameplay experience discussed in this series are also touched on during my weekly streams every Friday.

The format is different from writing, but it may help deepen your understanding from another angle.
