Looking at Tarkov’s 9x19mm Ammunition Through the Real World Part 2: 9x19mm Is Not Just a Pistol Cartridge

First part available here:

In the previous part, we looked at how the 9x19mm Parabellum was born.

9x19mm was not created as an overwhelmingly powerful cartridge.

It was small enough to work well in pistols, its recoil was not excessive, it allowed reasonable magazine capacity, and it had enough power for a military pistol cartridge.

I think this “just right” balance is what helped 9x19mm survive for so long.

However, one of the most interesting things about 9x19mm is that although it was born as a pistol cartridge, it did not remain limited to pistols.

In Tarkov, 9x19mm is used not only in pistols, but also in SMGs.

There are many 9x19mm weapons in the game, such as the MP5, MPX, PP-19, Saiga-9, and STM-9.

Inside the game, they may simply look like “lighter weapons that use 9mm ammunition.”

But if we look at the real-world development of 9x19mm, there is an important change behind this.

9x19mm did not remain just a pistol cartridge.

It also became a cartridge for close-range automatic fire.

The Idea of Firing Pistol Ammunition in Full Auto

A pistol is basically a weapon used to aim and fire one shot at a time.

Of course, semi-automatic pistols can fire multiple shots in succession.
Even so, the basic role of a pistol is still that of a compact sidearm used at close range, held in one or both hands.

An SMG, or submachine gun, is different.

An SMG is a weapon designed to fire pistol ammunition in automatic fire.

This is what makes it so interesting.

An SMG is not a small machine gun firing rifle ammunition.

In many cases, by using pistol ammunition, it becomes a close-range automatic weapon that a soldier or police officer can control while holding it by hand.

Rifle cartridges have power and range.

However, when firing in full auto at close range, rifle cartridges produce stronger recoil, and the weapon itself tends to become heavier.

By contrast, a pistol cartridge such as 9x19mm allows the shooter to fire many rounds at short distances while keeping recoil relatively manageable.

In other words, the SMG came from a demand like this:

More firepower than a pistol.
But not as much power or range as a rifle.
A weapon that is easy to handle in tight spaces and can fire rapidly at close range.

That is the kind of role the SMG was created to fill.

World War I and Close-Range Firepower

World War I is very important when thinking about the relationship between 9x19mm and the SMG.

One of the defining features of World War I was trench warfare.

Long rifles are effective for fighting at distance.

However, inside trenches, inside buildings, in narrow passages, or during assaults, long rifles can be difficult to handle.

At close range, firing one shot at a time may also fail to provide enough firepower.

What was needed was a weapon that was short, portable, and capable of automatic fire at close range.

Early submachine guns such as the German MP18 appeared in response to this kind of close-range combat requirement.

And the MP18 used 9x19mm Parabellum.

Here, the meaning of 9x19mm changed.

When fired from a pistol, 9x19mm is a sidearm cartridge.

When fired from an SMG, 9x19mm becomes a cartridge for suppressing or overwhelming an opponent at close range.

The cartridge itself is the same.

But the role changes depending on the weapon that fires it.

Why 9x19mm Was Well Suited to SMGs

So why was 9x19mm suitable for SMGs?

Once again, the answer is balance.

It had enough power as a pistol cartridge.
It did not recoil as strongly as rifle ammunition.
The cartridge was relatively compact, making magazine capacity easier to secure.
The weapon itself could be made relatively small.
It also worked well with comparatively simple operating systems such as blowback actions.

These qualities fit the needs of SMGs very well.

What an SMG needed was not the ability to shoot through an enemy at long range.

What it needed was the ability to fire many controllable shots in a short amount of time at close range.

In that sense, 9x19mm was a very convenient cartridge.

I think this feeling is also close to how 9x19mm SMGs work in Tarkov.

They are not weapons that win through single-shot power or overwhelming penetration.

Instead, they rely on low recoil, rate of fire, magazine capacity, and handling.

They apply pressure at close range.

They win through controllability.

A 9x19mm SMG, both in the real world and in Tarkov, is easier to understand if we see it not as a weapon that wins with one shot, but as a weapon that wins through controlled rapid fire.

The Meaning of Sharing Ammunition Between Pistols and SMGs

Another major advantage was ammunition commonality.

For militaries and police organizations, being able to use the same ammunition across multiple weapons is a major benefit.

If pistols and SMGs can both use 9x19mm, logistics become easier.

The same ammunition can be mass-produced.
Stock management becomes simpler.
Training and maintenance also become easier when the number of ammunition types is reduced.

This is not just about ease of use in the field.

It also affects how easy the entire organization’s equipment system is to manage.

In other words, 9x19mm was not simply “a pistol cartridge that could also be fired from SMGs.”

By connecting pistols and SMGs under the same ammunition system, it also helped simplify the equipment structure of military and police organizations.

From this perspective, it becomes easier to understand why 9x19mm spread so widely around the world.

It did not survive simply because it was a powerful cartridge.

It survived because it could be used in many different weapons and was easy for many different organizations to operate.

That is where the strength of 9x19mm lies.

SMGs Expanded the Meaning of 9x19mm

With the arrival of SMGs, 9x19mm became more than just a pistol cartridge.

In a pistol, it is a sidearm cartridge.

In an SMG, it becomes close-range firepower.

For police and security organizations, it becomes a controllable weapon for buildings, vehicles, and tight spaces.

In the civilian and competition world, it also appears in pistol-caliber carbines and training firearms.

In this way, as the types of weapons increased, the role of 9x19mm expanded as well.

Ammunition and weapons may seem to develop separately, but in reality they strongly influence each other.

Because there was a manageable cartridge like 9x19mm, SMGs were easier to build.

Because SMGs spread, 9x19mm gained value beyond its original role as a pistol cartridge.

And as the uses of those weapons expanded, more types of 9x19mm ammunition were needed.

I think this cycle helped support the development of 9x19mm.

9x19mm SMGs in Tarkov

In Tarkov, 9x19mm SMGs are relatively approachable weapons for beginners.

They have light recoil.
They can fire many rounds.
They are easy to handle at close range.
Depending on the weapon, they can also be customized quite a bit.
There are many equipment options built around them.

However, they also have weaknesses.

They do not have the same penetration as rifle cartridges.
They can feel underpowered at medium range and beyond.
They struggle in head-on fights against armored opponents.
If you choose the wrong ammunition, it can be difficult to deliver damage effectively.

This overlaps with the real-world nature of SMGs.

An SMG is not an all-purpose firearm.

Its value comes from being compact, controllable, and capable of automatic fire at close range.

That is why using a 9x19mm SMG in Tarkov as if it were a rifle will often feel painful.

However, if you use it at close range, inside buildings, while taking advantage of low recoil, magazine capacity, and rapid fire, its role begins to make sense.

A 9x19mm SMG is not a weak weapon.

It is a weapon whose strongest distance and strongest use case are limited.

The Basis for More Ammunition Types

This leads directly into the next topic.

Once 9x19mm began to be used not only in pistols but also in SMGs, the performance required from the same cartridge began to branch out.

A cartridge for pistols.
A cartridge that functions reliably in SMGs.
A cartridge mass-produced for military use.
A cartridge designed to reduce overpenetration for police use.
A cartridge designed with body armor in mind.
A cartridge focused on effects against soft targets.
A tracer cartridge that shows the flight path of the bullet.

In this way, multiple personalities began to appear inside the same 9x19mm family.

The 9x19mm rounds that appear in Tarkov can be seen as the game’s version of this branching of roles.

Armor-piercing rounds.
Standard rounds.
Flesh-damage-oriented rounds.
Tracer rounds.
Special-purpose rounds.

These are much easier to understand if we see them not simply as stronger or weaker rounds, but as rounds with different purposes.

Part 2 Summary

9x19mm was originally born as a pistol cartridge.

However, with the appearance of the SMG, its meaning expanded greatly.

When fired from a pistol, it is a sidearm cartridge.

When fired from an SMG, it becomes a cartridge for close-range automatic fire.

The same 9x19mm cartridge changes its role depending on the weapon that uses it.

And 9x19mm was extremely well suited to SMGs.

Its recoil was relatively manageable.
It allowed good magazine capacity.
It made compact weapons easier to build.
It was easy to fire rapidly at close range.
It allowed pistols and SMGs to share ammunition.

Because of these qualities, 9x19mm spread not only as a pistol cartridge, but also as a cartridge for close-range firepower.

When looking at 9x19mm SMGs in Tarkov, simply thinking “this is weaker than rifle ammunition” makes it hard to understand what these weapons are for.

A 9x19mm SMG is not a weapon that wins through single-shot power.

It is a weapon that uses light recoil and controlled rapid fire to apply pressure at close range.

In the next part, I want to look at why so many different types of 9x19mm ammunition appeared.

The 9x19mm rounds found in Tarkov become much more interesting when we see them not just as differences in stats, but as reflections of real-world role specialization.
