Bulk Buying (量り売り)-2

Recently, my wife’s lamentations regarding the interminable cycle of price hikes have grown more frequent. To be candid, the gravity of the situation had yet to truly hit home, insulated as I was by my recent truancy from the aisles of supermarkets. However, reality brought itself into sharp focus during my fleeting visits to convenience stores. Whenever I reach for my staple artisanal breads, I am staggered by the exorbitant prices; what once required a mere 500 yen now demands nearly double. Accordingly, I have found myself gravitating towards the reliable, if uninspired, curry from fast-food chains—a pragmatic choice that satiates for a fraction of the cost.
Consequently, I can only envision the frustration my wife endures, confronting the stark reality of inflation multiple times a day at the checkout. While I stand ready to assist, perhaps by accompanying her on these expeditions, I fear my profound ignorance of grocery logistics might render me more of a hindrance than a help. Thus, I have concluded that my most effective contribution is to offer a sympathetic ear from a safe, non-interfering distance.
Yet, I am not entirely devoid of utility. I have begun to conceive a strategy to mitigate these costs—though its feasibility remains a matter of debate. Given the precarious supply of naphtha and the resulting scarcity of plastics, I advocate for a widespread shift towards package-free, bulk-buying systems. If we can purchase vegetables and meat by weight, it stands to reason that this model is universally applicable to rice, condiments, and even milk—a practice already mainstream in parts of Europe. Such a transition would empower consumers to purchase only what is strictly necessary, thereby curtailing excess. While critics may scoff, in an era of simultaneous economic and environmental crises, the proposition feels increasingly compelling.
