“The Tokyo Trials and What Became of Hideki Tōjō”
⚖️ The Tokyo Trials (1946–1948)
Hideki Tōjō was tried as a Class-A war criminal.
He believed that everything he had done was
“for His Majesty the Emperor.”
However, under pressure from GHQ and those around him,
the responsibility was forced onto him as
“everything was his own personal decision.”
🗡️ Execution (December 23, 1948)
The final words he shouted were —
“Long live His Majesty the Emperor!!!”
He acted for the Emperor,
was denied for the Emperor,
and in the end, died for the Emperor.
👩🦱 To the Generations That Followed
After the war, GHQ abolished the Imperial Rescript on Education,
and the Emperor system was transformed into a “symbol.”
Yet in schools, there were scenes where
Hideki Tōjō’s grandchild was made to stand before the class
and told,
“Your grandfather was a person who did terrible things.”
👉 In this way, a structure was created
in which guilt was imposed even on “children and grandchildren.”
This would later come to be called
“the beginning of a self-deprecating view of history.”
