📖 Episode 1

“A NEET Family?! — The Problems of the Emperor System That Began in the Meiji Era”

Once upon a time, Japan was full of powerful clans—
small groups that were something like local kings.

One of those families said:

“We are descendants of the Sun Goddess (Amaterasu).”

By saying that, they acquired the brand of being
a “divine bloodline.”

Later, when the age of the samurai arrived,
they handed over all political power to the warriors.

For a very long time,
the imperial family survived in what could only be called
a “NEET-like state”—
doing nothing but praying.

Then suddenly,
the Black Ships arrived,
and the shogunate panicked.

When they realized,
“We can’t hold the country together anymore,”
the adults had a sudden idea.

“That’s it!
Let’s make that ‘divine-brand family’ the face of the nation!”

And so,
a 14-year-old boy—Emperor Meiji—
was abruptly hoisted up as
“the leader of Japan.”

👉 That is why the problems of the emperor system truly began to move
after the Meiji era.

“A NEET family suddenly becoming the face of the nation” —
this is where the story that leads to modern Japan truly begins.

To be honest, I started using AI through image generation first,
so ChatGPT was actually the last tool I began using.

Some people pointed out that the text was messy
and said it would be better to correct it.

However, this time I wanted to prioritize the content
over typos or minor mistakes,
so I deliberately left it as it was.

Below, I’ve included what I uploaded to TikTok.

At this point, the form of the nation-state called “Japan” was established for the first time.

Along with this,
• Mixed bathing was prohibited.
• Tattooing was banned.

In this way, regulations concerning the body and everyday life
were gradually introduced.

私個人の出発点ずなった。

I had been acquainted with Yasuhiro Nagasawa since before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Through Nagasawa, I came to know various people in the publishing world, and along that path, a space called Ichirin Rakza came into being.

At the time, much of my energy was devoted to raising children, and I did not have the mental space to pause and think deeply about the origins of Japan or the Emperor system.

In one conversation, I had the opportunity to hear Nagasawa’s views on the Emperor system.

Through that exchange, I became aware that I myself had very little understanding of the subject.

That realization became my personal starting point for re-examining the Emperor system.

“Thirteen Minutes: I Died and Came Back — A Near-Death Experience and the Miracle of Living,”
by Yasuhiro Nagasawa (Jiyusha), is a book that uses the author’s own near-death experience as a starting point to explore fundamental questions such as what it means to live and what it means to die.

Rather than framing these questions within religious doctrine or ideological systems, the book carefully presents them as personal, lived experience.

It does not impose extreme claims or definitive conclusions. Instead, its strength lies in the author’s effort to put the experience itself into words, leaving readers with the space to reflect on their own understanding of life and death.

This reflection began with a question that arose in a conversation with Kei Iketani, an editor-in-chief who now kindly calls me a good friend, following the hosting of Ichirin Rakza:

“Why are there so many people from the baby boomer generation who oppose the Emperor system?”

That question made me want to think it through in my own way.

In addition, while talking with Tetsuya Shinmoto, who has contributed an article on “Medical Cannabis in the United States” to ASA Japan, he shared a candid feeling:

“I’ve been away from Japan for too long, so honestly, I don’t really understand it anymore.”

Following that flow, wanting to deepen my understanding of this theme, the three of us held a private Google Meet, where I had the opportunity to listen to each person’s perspectives and experiences.

In the process, my sense of Japanese identity—something I had previously taken for granted—was quietly but profoundly shaken, and I found myself unexpectedly moved to tears.
