アマガシタ 紅色下地に対し白斑が多いものほど上花となる

この『天ヶ下』は、椿の中で古典的品種として知られているものとして、１６８１年『花壇綱目』に記録されているとても古い歴史をもつ椿である。
その花の特徴としては、濃紅色の地に白い斑が鮮やかに入る一重咲きのもので、ラッパ咲から平咲きへとなり、筒蕊が特徴となるツバキ。２〜４月にかけてが開花時期である。その花は最大で花径１５ｃｍの極大輪になる。
世にはヤブツバキ品種を低く見る傾向があるがこちらのアマガシタは、そのヤブツバキ系の品種であり、耐寒性にも優れる強靭さと、大胆な模様が美しい品種となる。紅色下地の花弁に対し白斑の多いものほど上花とされ、特に関西地方にて栽培されてきたものとなる。
アマガシタはその美しさと歴史的な背景からも、多くの園芸家に愛されている椿のひとつとなる。
『玉ノ浦』（タマノウラ）、『九曲」（キュウキョク）に並ぶ椿の名品のひとつと私は思っている。

Amagashita is known as a classical camellia variety with a long history. It was recorded in “Kadan Komoku” (花壇綱目) in 1681, making it one of the oldest documented camellias.
This variety is characterized by its single-petaled flowers with a deep crimson base and striking white variegation. The bloom shape transitions from a trumpet-like form to a more open, flat shape, with prominent tubular stamens as a key feature. The flowering period extends from February to April, and some blooms can reach an impressive diameter of 15 cm, making them extraordinarily large.
Although Yabutsubaki (wild camellia) varieties are sometimes undervalued, Amagashita belongs to this lineage and is highly regarded for its cold resistance, robustness, and bold coloration. The more abundant the white variegation on the crimson petals, the more prized the flower is. This variety has been particularly cultivated in the Kansai region.
Due to its historical significance and striking beauty, Amagashita remains a beloved camellia among horticulturists. In my opinion, it stands among the finest camellias, alongside “Tamano-ura” (玉ノ浦) and “Kyūkyoku” (九曲).
