パットン ダイナミックなフォルムが美しいツバキ
パットン （PATTON）
奈良は大和郡山市にある椿の苗木の販売専門店と
して名の知られる『椿寿庵』（チンジュアン）。
所狭しと並べられたハウス栽培の凄い数の椿は、
メジロやヒヨドリの吸蜜による花弁傷も見られず
美しい状態なのが素晴らしく、私が作成している
椿のデジタル図鑑の貴重な撮影データを収集する
場のひとつとなっている。
ここには江戸時代からの古典椿もあれば、現代椿
もあり、また西洋ツバキも多数展示されている。
ここの本来の経営は椿の苗木の販売がベースとは
なるがその際に、椿のハウス内の見学や撮影等も
フルオープンとなっていて貴重な椿に出逢える場
でもある。私の場合は椿の苗木を購入される仲間
の付き添いというカタチで撮影をさせて頂いてる
ものとなる。
京都府立植物園にて、世界ツバキ協会の方々への
ガイドツアーのサポートを今年になって、させて
いただいたものだが、その海外からの椿見学の場
にもエントリーされている場にもなっているのが
この椿寿庵なのである。
そこで、チョコンと小さな椿に見事な花が咲いて
いたのが今回紹介の『パットン』（PATTON）。
日本の椿、カメリア ジャポニカのひとつの品種の
『白菊』（シロギク）の実を、アメリカの土に埋めて
出来上がった実生品種が、このパットンとなる。
オリジナルの花は、和名にある通り真っ白なのが
アメリカで育てられて、この『パットン』の名が
付けられている。
以前にも逆パターンで、アメリカ産の椿である
『チューリップタイム』の鮮やかな濃桃色の花が
石川県での実生により生まれた『以津ノ夢』では
優しい淡桃色のものが誕生したのを記事にさせて
頂いた。気候や雨量などを含めた環境の違いから
別物が生まれるのは紫陽花（アジサイ）の例でも
見られるもの。
椿寿庵では、こんなお宝みたいなツバキも普通に
沢山展示されていて、つい時間を忘れてしまう。
さて、この椿の名に付いている『パットン』だが
正式な名称は『ジェネラル ジョージ パットン』で
戦術に長けたアメリカ陸軍の将軍の名前となる。
映画『パットン大戦車軍団』は、１９７０年公開
の大ヒット映画で、脚本はゴッドファーザーでも
有名なフランシスフォードコッポラが手掛ける。
本作はアカデミー賞を幾つも獲得した映画である。
パットン将軍の戦果の功績を讃え、その後の戦車
にもその名を残した人物だが、このツバキの名に
残されているのは、卓越したデザインの美しさと
オリジナルの白が赤に変化した奇抜さに由来する
ものである。パットン将軍は兵士たちを鼓舞する
心を揺さぶる情熱的な演説の素晴らしさも後世に
語り継がれており、このツバキにもそれに通ずる
力強さがある事が命名の由来とされる。
Patton (PATTON)
In Yamato-Koriyama City, Nara, there is a well-
known nursery specializing in camellia seedlings
called Chinjuan (椿寿庵).
The vast number of greenhouse-cultivated
camellias arranged in neat rows is truly
impressive. What’s even more remarkable is
that the flowers remain in pristine condition,
free from petal damage caused by nectar-
feeding birds like Japanese White-eyes (Mejiro)
and Brown-eared Bulbuls (Hiyodori). This makes
Chinjuan an invaluable location for collecting
photographic data for my digital camellia catalog.
This nursery houses a diverse collection, ranging
from classic Edo-period camellias to modern
varieties and even Western camellias. While their
primary business is the sale of camellia seedlings,
they also open their greenhouses for tours and
photography, offering a rare opportunity to
encounter exceptional camellias. In my case, I
visit Chinjuan as a companion to friends who are
purchasing camellia seedlings, allowing me to
capture photographs of these stunning flowers.
Earlier this year, I had the privilege of assisting
with a guided tour for members of the International
Camellia Society at the Kyoto Botanical Garden.
Chinjuan was also one of the featured locations
for this international camellia viewing tour.
Among the many beautiful camellias blooming
there, one particularly striking small camellia
caught my attention—“Patton” (PATTON).
The Origins of the Camellia “Patton”
“Patton” is a seedling variety derived from the
Japanese camellia (Camellia japonica)
“Shirogiku” (白菊). The original “Shirogiku” is
pure white, as its Japanese name suggests.
However, when its seed was planted in American
soil, it resulted in this new variety, which was later
named “Patton.”
A similar phenomenon has been observed before.
The American camellia “Tulip Time,” known for its
vivid deep pink blossoms, produced a soft pastel
pink variety called “Itsu no Yume” (以津ノ夢) when
grown from seed in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan.
Such variations occur due to differences in climate,
rainfall, and environmental conditions, much like
how hydrangea (ajisai) colors change based on
soil acidity.
At Chinjuan, countless such rare and valuable
camellias are displayed, making it easy to lose
track of time while admiring them.
Why Is This Camellia Named “Patton”?
The full name of this camellia is “General George
Patton,” named after the renowned U.S. Army
general known for his exceptional strategic skills.
The 1970 war film “Patton”—a massive box office
hit—further popularized his name. Written by
Francis Ford Coppola, who later became famous
for The Godfather, the film won multiple Academy
Awards.
General Patton was honored for his military
achievements, and his name was even given to
tanks in recognition of his contributions. Similarly,
the camellia “Patton” was named to reflect both
the stunning beauty of its design and the dramatic
transformation of its original white petals into
red—a bold and striking change.
Patton was also known for his passionate and
inspiring speeches, which deeply moved and
motivated his soldiers. This same strength and
energy can be seen in the vibrancy of this camellia,
making it a fitting tribute to the legendary general.
