神等去出 （カラサデ） 出雲大社に由来する椿
神等去出 （カラサデ）
ツツジ目、ツバキ科、ツバキ属の常緑低木
このツバキに付く名の由来がとても面白い。
日本の聖地と呼ばれる出雲大社（イズモタイシヤ）。
この地へと日本全国の各地より集まってきた八百万
（ヤオヨロズ）の神々。これらの神々がそれぞれの国
へと縁や福を持ち帰り去っていく事を『神等去出』
（カラサデ）と呼ばれており、これら神々をお見送り
する祭が『神等去出祭』 （カラサデサイ）となる。
そんな由緒ある名がそのまま付いた椿が、こちらの
『神等去出』 （カラサデ）、その名付けの由来とは
それら神々をお見送りする時期に合わせて開花する
からと云われている。
出雲大社のある島根県、その松江市が原産となる椿
であり、唐子咲の可愛らしい花であり、その開花の
時期は１１月となる。これは神在月（カンナヅキ）の
終わりを告げる祭りの頃と時期が重なるのである。

神等去出の花は、外弁が赤に対して、唐子弁は白と
云う印象があるものだが、今回目にしたものでは
いずれもが赤であり、これはこれで珍しいものだと
納得。このツバキは縁起の良い花とされているもの
でもあり、紅白のものもいずれ撮影して載せたいと
思っている。
さて、八百万の神々が、何故出雲大社に集まるのか
についてであるが、こちらには諸説ある。
①日本の最高位に君臨する神、『大国主大神』の元と
日本全国の神々が集まり、会議を開くためという説
②１０月は極陰の月で、畿内から極陰の方角にある
出雲へ陽の神々が集結する事で世界が再生する説
③総ての神の母神である伊邪那美命（イザナミ）の
亡くなった１０月、埋葬された出雲の墓参りの説
と、そんなことをこの花を眺めながら考えてみるの
もまた面白いのである。
KARASADE (神等去出)
An evergreen shrub of the order Ericales, family Theaceae, genus Camellia.
The origin of the name attached to this camellia is particularly fascinating.
Izumo Taisha, a sacred site in Japan, is where the myriad gods (Yaoyorozu no Kami) from all over the country gather. When these gods return to their respective lands, bringing with them blessings and fates, this departure is called “KARASADE” (神等去出). The festival held to send off these gods is known as the “Karasade-sai” (神等去出祭).
This distinguished name was given directly to the camellia “Karasade”, as it is said to bloom in sync with the period when the gods are sent off.
This camellia originates from Matsue City in Shimane Prefecture, where Izumo Taisha is located. It features charming karako-zaki (唐子咲, “child-like petal formation”) flowers and blooms in November. This coincides with the festival marking the end of Kamiarizuki (神在月, “The Month of the Gods”), which in the old lunar calendar corresponds to mid-October.
The flowers of Karasade typically have red outer petals and white karako petals, creating a striking contrast. However, the specimens I observed were entirely red, which is quite rare. Since this camellia is considered an auspicious flower, I hope to capture and share images of the classic red-and-white variation in the future.
Now, why do the myriad gods gather at Izumo Taisha? There are several theories:
1. The Assembly of the Gods: It is believed that all the gods of Japan gather at the residence of Ōkuninushi no Ōkami, one of the highest-ranking deities, to hold a grand meeting.
2. The Rebirth of the World: October is considered the month of extreme yin (kyoku-in). Since Izumo is located in the kyoku-in direction relative to the capital (Kinai), the gods of the sun (yang) assemble there, symbolizing the renewal of the world.
3. A Pilgrimage to the Mother of Gods: October marks the anniversary of the death of Izanami-no-Mikoto, the mother of all deities. The gods are believed to gather in Izumo to visit her grave.
Thinking about these mystical traditions while admiring the Karasade camellia makes the experience even more captivating.
