ミツヒメ　長崎県平戸市選出の可憐なツバキ

蜜姫 （ミツヒメ）


長崎県平戸市の民家にて、ツバキの栽培種の中で
選抜された品種として１９７５年に『蜜姫』と命名
されたもの。


花弁は白で、肉厚の花弁による一重咲で、抱え咲。
この抱え咲とは、雄蕊を花弁が抱え込む様に咲く
形態のものを指す。中の蕊は筒蕊となる。


服部緑地都市緑化植物園の中の椿山の中で撮影した
ものであるが、頑丈な葉に鳥の爪痕、肉厚の花弁に
嘴での傷が見られ、この花蜜を求めた形跡である。


その名から蜜量が多いのを想像させてしまう可憐で
可愛いツバキである。


Mitsuhime (蜜姫)


Mitsuhime is a cultivated camellia variety that was selected and named in 1975 at a private residence in Hirado City, Nagasaki Prefecture.


The flower has a single, cup-shaped bloom with thick, white petals. This “cup-shaped” form refers to the way the petals enclose the stamens, giving the bloom a distinctive structure. The stamens form a tubular shape at the center.


This particular specimen was photographed in the Camellia Garden of Hattori Ryokuchi Urban Greening Botanical Garden. The sturdy leaves bear claw marks from birds, and the thick petals show signs of damage from beaks—clear evidence of birds seeking its nectar.


As its name suggests, this charming and delicate camellia evokes the image of a flower rich in nectar.
