ショッコウニシキ　分類しづらい枝変わりハルサザンカ

蜀紅錦 （ショッコウニシキ）


サザンカとヤブツバキの種間交雑により生まれた
品種と考えられ、カテゴリーは『ハルサザンカ』
に分類される。花色もだが、花型もバラエティに
富むもので枝変わりが出やすいのが特徴。


この撮影した花弁は、紅色花弁の端部に薄っすら
白が出現し、立体感が表れてとても美しいもの。


絞り、掠り、単色、あまりに表現バリエーション
が多彩すぎて単品でこれを判断するのは難しい。
なお、この品種判定は『蜀紅錦』の名札が付いて
いたからである。枝変わりツバキが品種特定する
のが難しいのがここにある。


どこの植物園でも共通して言えることは、品種を
示すタグが失われてしまうと、その特定を改めて
調べるのはかなり難しい事になる。

ツバキの面白さは、種間交雑による新たなものが
生み出されるのは魅力だが、その特定の難しさは
課題なのである。

It is believed that this variety was created through interspecific hybridization between Sasanqua (Camellia sasanqua) and Yabutsubaki (Camellia japonica). It is classified under the category of “Harusazanka” (spring-blooming Sasanqua). Not only does it exhibit a diverse range of flower colors, but its flower shapes also vary widely, making it prone to producing sport mutations (branch mutations).


The petals in this photograph display a striking appearance, with a subtle white hue emerging at the edges of the red petals, adding a sense of depth and making them exceptionally beautiful.


With such an abundance of variations—striped, brushed, solid-colored—it is difficult to identify the variety based on a single bloom. In this case, the plant was identified as Shokkō Nishiki because it was labeled as such. The difficulty in identifying camellias is particularly evident when dealing with sport mutations.


A common challenge faced by botanical gardens everywhere is that once a plant’s identification tag is lost, re-determining its exact variety becomes a significantly difficult task.
