十八学士 （ジュウハチガクシ）


ツツジ目、ツバキ科、ツバキ属の常緑低木


特殊な花弁の配列をするもので、かつては同様に
花弁が幾何学模様を描く『九曲』（キュウキョク）
と並び、台湾椿に分類されていたが、最近の調査
により、日本の椿に分類されている。


この『十八学士』の名は、ツバキの品種の中でも
特に美しい花弁の形に由来しており、その名は唐
の皇帝の太宗文武が開いた学問所に通った十八人
の文学士に由来、知的で優雅なイメージと重なる
この品種に相応しい名が付けられている。


整然と並んだ花弁が美しく重なり、六角形の花冠
を形成する珍しい構造を持っているのがこの椿の
特徴で、その花弁の数は７０～１３０枚にも及び
開花時期は１〜２月にかけて咲。花弁の色は多岐
に渡り、白、桃、赤、そして白地に紅縦絞など、
様々な色の花を一株で楽しむことができる。

An evergreen shrub belonging to the order
Ericales, family Theaceae, and genus Camellia.


It features a unique arrangement of petals and
was once classified alongside a similar variety
with geometrically patterned petals called
“Kyukyoku” (九曲), and both were grouped as
Taiwanese camellias. However, recent studies
have reclassified it as a Japanese camellia.


The name “Juhachigakushi” is derived from
the exceptionally beautiful shape of its petals.
It is said to originate from the eighteen literary
scholars who attended the academy established
by Emperor Taizong of the Tang dynasty, a name
that evokes an image of intellect and elegance
befitting this variety.


This camellia is distinguished by its neatly
arranged overlapping petals that form a rare
hexagonal corolla. The number of petals ranges
from 70 to 130, and it blooms from January to
February. The petal colors vary widely—ranging
from white, peach, and red to patterns such as
red streaks on a white background—allowing
one plant to showcase a variety of colors.
