ヒゴツバキ　『肥後六花』に数えられる熊本の細川藩が育成した椿

肥後椿（ヒゴツバキ）

江戸時代、熊本地方にて藩の保護のもと、細川家中
の同好の士たちが集まり椿花連が結成され、特別に
育成された品種群がこの『肥後椿』（ヒゴツバキ）と
呼ばれたもの。

この花形の特徴は、一重咲で花弁は平らに広く開き
花の中心の雄しべは大きく長く、一本一本が放射状
に広く展開するものとなっている。

この細川藩はこのツバキを含め、六種類もの植物を
育て上げる。ツバキ、サザンカ、ショウブ、キク、
シャクヤク、アサガオ。この六種を指し『肥後六花』
と呼ばれている。

熊本にある創業７５年の和菓子屋『香梅』。
ここでは『肥後六花』の六種の美しい和菓子が販売
されている。生菓子なので店頭販売のみである。

花もだが、菓もまた同様にとても美しい。

Higo Camellia (Higo Tsubaki)

During the Edo period, in the Kumamoto region,
a group of enthusiasts from the Hosokawa clan,
under the protection of the domain, formed the
“Tsubaki Flower Association.” The specially
cultivated varieties that emerged from this tradition
came to be known as Higo Camellia (Higo Tsubaki).

The defining characteristics of this flower include
its single-petal bloom, with petals that spread out
flat and wide. The central stamens are notably
large and long, with each individual stamen
extending outward in a radial pattern.

The Hosokawa domain cultivated not only this
camellia but also five other plant species: camellia
(Tsubaki), sasanqua (Sazanka), iris (Shōbu), chrysanthemum (Kiku), peony (Shakuyaku), and
morning glory (Asagao). These six species
collectively became known as the “Higo Rokuka”
(The Six Flowers of Higo).

In Kumamoto, there is a long-established Japanese
confectionery shop, Kōbai, which has been in
business for 75 years. Here, beautifully crafted
wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets) inspired
by the six flowers of Higo Rokuka are sold. Since
they are fresh confections, they are available
exclusively in-store.

Not only are the flowers exquisite, but the sweets
are equally stunning.
