比喩による誇張のliterally（『プロジェクト・ヘイル・メアリー』、ピケティ、『グレート・ギャツビー』、『カラーパープル』、『カラマーゾフの兄弟』）
literally には大雑把に分けて三つの用法がある。まずは「字義通り、逐語的に」という意味で、言葉そのものの定義に焦点がある。二番目にその表現が比喩でなく、そのままストレートな意味であると念を押すタイプである。そして三番目が強調のための誇張表現であり、比喩に対してliterallyが用いられる。
このliterallyはくだけた口語でよく使われ、多くは主観的でルーズな表現である。話者にとって、その表現が比喩かそうでないかの分別はもっぱら副次的であり、とにかく「それくらい凄い」と伝えようとしているのである。強く訴えかけたいという気持ちは、必然的に大袈裟な表現を呼び込む。
さらに決定的なのは、その比喩が話者本人の認識にとって「誇張としてふさわしく、その意味で適合している」という意識である。例えば「そこは文字通り天国だった」という言葉は、天国という比喩が形容として本当にピッタリであるという認識に基づいている。これはイディオム、定型表現に対して用いられる際、特に著しい。これを踏まえると、三つの用法には、ある言葉が適切に用いられているという認識が背後にある点では同じだといえるのかもしれない。
まず、字義通り、逐語的にいうと、という意味で、言葉同士の対応、一致が意味の焦点である。
