現代アメリカ音楽の象徴”ボブ・ディラン”のドキュメンタリー映画『名もなき者／A Complete Unknown』を見てきた
知人の薦めで、新宿ピカデリーにて上映されているボブ・ディランのドキュメンタリー映画『名もなき者〜A complete unknown』を観てきました。
なるべくネタバレしないような映画の感想と、思いを馳せるに至った自分のアメリカ音楽の体験について書きます。
音楽映画が好きで、最近観た中で記憶に新しいのはエルヴィス・プレスリーの『ELVIS』、ビートルズが存在しない世界に異世界転生する『YESTERDAY』、MAROON5のVo.アダム・レヴィーン演じる『はじまりのうた』、個性派俳優マーク・ウォルバーグがガンズのアクセルばりにメタルシンガーとして躍動する『ROCKSTAR』、ヒップホップ創世記のアメリカ西海岸を描いた『STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON』など。
QUEENの『ボヘミアンラプソディ』、スタンダップコメディ出身俳優ジャック・ブラックが活躍する『スクールオブロック』、あとはミュージカル映画『ラ・ラ・ランド』なんかも。
音楽映画の良さってなんだろう。自分の知らない音楽を手っ取り早く知るのにいいんじゃないか。映像がなくてもいい音楽はいい音楽なんだけど、絵があった方がスッと入ってくる。
MTV全盛期のアメリカで音楽業界の栄枯盛衰を観た。ブリトニー・スピアーズが登場した時代は確実に映像ありきの音楽だったし、マイケル・ジャクソンだって映像と音がリンクする。レディガガもそうだし、アメリカ音楽の繁栄は映像が決して欠かせない要素だとあらためて認識する。
さて、ボブ・ディランという人物をよく知らない。ノーベル平和賞か何かを受賞したのに式に出席しなかったヒネたおじさんというイメージ。ミュージシャンはみんな基本ヒネてるし、OASISのギャラガー兄弟だってヒネまくり。むしろ個性。
空耳アワーで「Like a rolling stone」の歌詞の空耳「チュ～してね〜」を知ってからの出会いじゃないか。実際本当によく知らない。
Guns 'N' Rosesのヒット曲『Knockin' on Heaven's Door』がボブ・ディランの曲だということを、ガンズがヒットしていた当時、なんとなく意識はした。
アメリカ人って、カントリー音楽が本当に好きな国民だ。カントリー音楽は、日本でいえば民謡みたいなもの。吉田兄弟が津軽じょんがら節で奏でる音楽が日本人に刺さるのは、伝統文化に対する敬意と地方から上京する人への共感があるから。アメリカも同じ状況なんだろうか。
学生時代にニューヨークを訪れた時、セントラルパークの池のほとりで週末だけカントリー音楽のライブが行われていて、半裸のおじさんがギター1本でカントリーを歌い上げる光景を見た。
圧巻だったのは、赤ちゃん連れの親子や幼稚園児くらいの年齢の子から、80歳近くの年輩のおじいちゃんおばあちゃんまで、みんなで一斉に同じ歌を合唱する光景をこの目で見たこと。
YouTubeで検索したら出てきた。『THAT GUITAR MAN FROM CENTRAL PARK』というCDをリリースしてるDavid Ippolitoという人。日本の現地コーディネーターに紹介してもらった。めちゃいい人。
『American Pie』という曲を100人以上の観客で大合唱する光景は忘れられない真夏のニューヨークの風景。アメリカ人に染み付くカントリー音楽のつながりの深さを感じた瞬間だった。
日本で子どもから大人までが等しく一緒に気持ちよく歌える曲なんてどれだけあるだろうか？ それだけカントリーが国民に根付いている音楽だということ。
ハワイ出身のジャック・ジョンソン、最近の歌姫の印象が強いテイラー・スイフトも広範にいえばカントリーシンガーに位置付けられる。人気歌手がカントリー出身なことは珍しいことではない。
※ここで一つ考えなくてはならないのが、人種のこと。オーディエンスになっているのはあくまで″白人″であり、メキシカンや黒人、アジアンなどアメリカに多く共生している人たちが含まれないこと。音楽と人種の関係についてはエルヴィス・プレスリーも最後まで悩んでいるように見えたが、複雑な事情を含んでおり簡単には説明できないと書いておきます。
映画で主役のボブ・ディラン役を演じた俳優ティモシー・シャラメ、自分が映画館に3回足を運んだ作品『インターステラー』で主人公の息子役を演じていた。顔に見覚えがあったので分かった時は嬉しかった。
作品に登場するアーティストにウディ・ガスリーとピート・シーガー、ジョーン・バエズ、そしてジョニー・キャッシュ。
『Ring of fire』でヒットしたジョニー・キャッシュも、映画『TOP GUN』で「Great Ball of Fire」を歌うトム・クルーズやマイルズ・テラーもまたアメリカそのものという感じで、あのシリーズで自分がオールディーズに興味を持ったのも過言ではない。
そういえばジョーン・バエズ役で出演している女優、モニカ・バルバロが『TOP GUN MAVERICK』でフェニックスという女性パイロット役を演じていたことを知ったのは映画を観終わってから。なんだかんだ自分が好きなものが色々つながって面白い。
まとまりのない感じになっちゃったけど、ボブ・ディランのことを知らない人が観ても十分に面白い作品だった。
フォーク音楽のフェスでエレキギターをかき鳴らし、観客から「下品な音楽」とブーイングされても気にせず演奏し続けたボブ・ディランの本質はパンクだ。
映画『ELVIS』でもエルビス・プレスリーは大衆に下品と言われながら新しい音楽に挑戦した。アメリカ音楽発展の歴史に「下品さとの戦い」というのがあるのは興味深い。
英語で品のあること、上品なものを「classy」といい、古くからの良いものを一流という意味で「classic」と呼んだりする。英語でいうクラスというか階級的なものが日常に溶け込んでいる証拠。
スタンダップコメディでも下ネタでギリギリのラインを攻めて本質的な笑いを成立させる欧米社会。音楽も笑いも伝統を守りつつ革新的な刺激を求めてエネルギーを放つアメリカ文化にあらためて敬意を覚える作品。
予備知識がなくても楽しめるので、アメリカ音楽の歴史を知るためだけでも、気楽に観に行ってみてもらいたいです。
Watched the Bob Dylan Documentary： A Complete Unknown — The Symbol of Modern American Music
At the recommendation of a friend, I went to Shinjuku Piccadilly to see the Bob Dylan documentary A Complete Unknown.
Here I’ll share my impressions—without giving away spoilers—and also reflect on my own experiences with American music.
Why I Love Music Films
I’m a big fan of music-related movies. Recently, I’ve seen:
ELVIS (about Elvis Presley)
YESTERDAY (a parallel world where the Beatles never existed)
Begin Again (starring Maroon 5’s Adam Levine)
Rock Star (Mark Wahlberg as a heavy metal singer à la Axl Rose)
Straight Outta Compton (depicting the birth of West Coast hip hop)
Also Bohemian Rhapsody (QUEEN), School of Rock (with stand-up comedian-turned-actor Jack Black), and the musical film La La Land.
The beauty of music films is that they’re a quick way to discover music you don’t know. Good music stands on its own, but visuals make it even more impactful.
During MTV’s golden age in America, the music industry’s rise and fall was inseparable from video. Britney Spears’s era was inseparable from visuals, as was Michael Jackson. Lady Gaga too. American music’s prosperity is deeply tied to imagery.
My Image of Bob Dylan
Honestly, I didn’t know much about Bob Dylan. My impression was of a grumpy guy who skipped the Nobel Prize ceremony. But then, musicians are usually grumpy—like the Gallagher brothers of Oasis. That’s personality.
My first “encounter” with Dylan was through a parody on Japanese TV (Soramimi Hour) of the lyrics to “Like a Rolling Stone.” Later, I realized Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door—a Guns N’ Roses hit—was originally his song.
America and Country Music
Americans truly love country music. For them, it’s like Japanese folk songs—deeply tied to tradition and community.
I once visited New York as a student. By a lake in Central Park, I saw weekend country performances. A half-naked man sang with just a guitar. What amazed me most was how everyone—babies with parents, kindergarten kids, and grandparents in their 80s—sang along together.
That unity left a huge impression. Later, I learned the performer was David Ippolito, known as “That Guitar Man from Central Park.” He even released a CD.
I’ll never forget the sight of over 100 people singing “American Pie” in unison under the summer sun. It showed me how deeply country music is ingrained in American hearts.
Japan doesn’t really have songs that both children and adults can all sing together with equal joy. That’s how rooted country is in the U.S.
Jack Johnson (from Hawaii) and Taylor Swift, despite being pop stars, can both be placed in the lineage of country singers. It’s not unusual for major artists to come from country.
Of course, there’s the issue of race—most of the audience was white. Other communities (Mexican, Black, Asian) weren’t visible. Music and race in America is complex, as even Elvis Presley struggled with.
Timothy Chalamet as Bob Dylan
Dylan is portrayed by Timothy Chalamet, whom I recognized from Interstellar (he played the protagonist’s son). Seeing him again on screen was a pleasant surprise.
The film also features artists like Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, and Johnny Cash.
Cash, famous for “Ring of Fire”, is as quintessentially American as Tom Cruise or Miles Teller singing “Great Balls of Fire” in Top Gun. That movie series is actually what got me into oldies.
After the film, I realized Joan Baez was played by Monica Barbaro, who also starred in Top Gun Maverick as the pilot “Phoenix.” It’s funny how the things I like connect.
Punk at Heart
Even for someone like me who didn’t know Dylan well, the film was fascinating.
At a folk festival, Dylan shocked audiences by playing electric guitar. Booed as “vulgar music,” he ignored them and kept playing. That defiance was pure punk.
Similarly, in ELVIS, Presley was criticized as vulgar while pioneering a new sound. It seems American music history has always included a battle with “vulgarity.”
In English, “classy” means refined, while “classic” means something time-honored and first-rate. The language itself shows how class and culture are intertwined in daily life.
Stand-up comedy, too, pushes boundaries with dirty jokes to deliver essential laughter. Both music and comedy reflect an American culture that respects tradition while craving innovative shock and energy.
Final Thoughts
Even without much prior knowledge, it’s an enjoyable film. I recommend it as a gateway to American music history.
Bob Dylan reminded me: art evolves by challenging norms, even when labeled vulgar. That’s the essence of cultural progress.
