【今日のエッセイ】

決めるのが怖いのは、決めた先が見えないからだと思います。

夕暮れの鍛冶場に、金属を打つ音が響いています。

打たれるたび、鉄は余分をこそげ落として、細く鋭くなっていきます。

迷いを残したままの刃は、けっきょく何も切れないままです。

決めるというのは、選ばなかったほうを静かに手放すことなんだと思いま
す。

はがねうつ
おとのひびきの
するどさに
まよいのふちを
たちきるゆうべ

【Today's Essay】

Deciding frightens us, I think, because we cannot see past the decision.

In a forge at dusk, the sound of hammered metal rings out.

With every blow, the iron sheds what it does not need and grows thin and sharp.

A blade left full of hesitation will, in the end, cut nothing at all.

To decide is to quietly let go of the path you did not take.

The ringing sound
of hammered steel,
so keen —
and in this evening I cut through
the deep pool of my doubt.
