【今日のエッセイ】

八月十五日、終戦の日。

軍人として、また名もなき市井の人として、この国のために倒れていった数えきれない方々に、静かに頭を垂れたいと思います。

その方々の多くは、英雄になりたかったわけではなく、軍神になりたかった訳でもなく、ただ家に帰りたかったのだと思います。

祈りは、何かを変える力ではないのかもしれません。

それでも、覚えていること自体が、いちばん静かな祈りなんだと思います。

こうべをたれる
はちがつの
ひかりのなかに
あなたをおもう

【Today's Essay】

August fifteenth, the day the war ended.

To the countless people who fell for this country — soldiers, and ordinary citizens whose names no one recorded — I quietly bow my head.

Most of them, I believe, never wished to be heroes; they only wished to go home.

Prayer may not be a force that changes anything.

And yet simply remembering is, I think, the quietest prayer of all.
