時の巫女たち／4．時が先か、変化が先か　The Maidens of Time／4. Which comes first, time or change?

　休憩時間が終わり、再び上村が聴衆の前に立った。
「さて、ここまで、恋愛について色々と語ってきました。恋愛で大きな役割を果たすのが『時』です。時とともに褪せる想いもあれば、『時』の中で熟成され鮮やかになる想いもある。でも、ここで少し考えてみましょう。私たちは、カレンダーとにらめっこしながら、『彼と出会ってひと月が経ったから、私の彼への想いはこうなる……そして、彼の私への気持は......』というふうにお互いの関係を変えていくのでしょうか？」
　上村はそこで言葉を切った。アオイには、聴衆が少しざわめいたように感じられた。
　「カレンダーがあってもなくても、私たちの関係は変わって行き、その変化に気づいたとき、ふとカレンダーに目をやると、ひと月が経っていたり、三月が経っていたりする。そちらが真実ではないでしょうか？」
聴衆のざわめきが大きくなった。アオイが、右隣の表情豊かな女性にちらと目をやると、怪訝そうな顔で上村をじっと見つめている。

  The break was over and Uemura stood in front of the audience again. 
"Well, so far, we have talked a lot about love. One thing that plays a big role in love is 'time'. Our feelings change with the passage of time. Some feelings fade as time passes, while others mature and become vivid as time passes. But let's think about this for a moment. Do we change our relationships with each other referring to a calendar n the following way: 'It's been a month since I met him, so my feelings for him are like this... and his feelings for me are like this...'?   
   There, Kamimura stopped talking. Aoi felt a slight stir in the audience.
  "Our relationship changes with or without a calendar, and when we notice this change and look at the calendar, it just so happens that a month has passed, or three months have passed.Isn’t that the truth?"
The audience murmured more. Aoi glanced over to the expressive woman to her right and found her staring at Kamimura with a puzzled look on her face.

　上村がほほ笑んだ。
「この考え方は、私のオリジナルではありません。高校以来の私の親友である、時宗司（トキムネ ツカサ）クンからの受け売りです。時宗クンのおかげで、私は、こんなことを考えるようになりました」
と言って、上村がリモコンを操作した。
　スクリーンに文字が現れた。
『時が経つから変化するのか、それとも、変化したから時が経ったと認識するのか？』
「ここから先は、時宗クンにも加わってもらって、この疑問について、みなさんと語り合って行きたいと思います。それでは、時宗司クンを紹介します」
　カンファレンス・ルームとエントランス・ホールの間のドアが開き、長身の男性が登場した。岩から掘り出したような角ばった身体つきと顔つきが印象的だ。男性は上村と握手を交わしてから、
「初めまして。時宗司です」
と聴衆に挨拶した。
「時宗クンは、現在，城南大学の文学部の准教授で、時間についての比較社会学を研究しています」
上村が時宗の職業を補足した。
　上村と時宗の二人が並んで立つと、二人は対照的だった。上村は均整のとれた柔らかな体形で、穏やかで親しみの持てる顔をしている。一方の時宗は、角ばっているだけでなく、腕と脚が全体とアンバランスに長く、顔も非常に険しい印象を与える。ただ、時宗の顔の中で、メタルフレームにメガネの奥の切れ長で二重瞼の目だけが温かく柔らかい雰囲気を醸していることに、アオイは気付いた。込み入っていそうな人だと、アオイは思った。

 Kaminura smiled and said,
"This way of thinking is not original to me. I borrowed it from my best friend since high school, Mr. Tokimune Tsukasa. Tsukasa opened my eyes to the following question: 'Do things change because time passes, or do we recognize time as having passed because things have changed?' From here on, I would like to discuss this question with you all, with Tsukasa joining us. Now, let me introduce Tsukasa"　
   The door between the conference room and the entrance hall opened, and a tall man appeared. He had an angular body and face that looked as if he had been carved out of rock. After shaking hands with Kamimura, the man greeted the audience, saying,"It's nice to meet you. I'm Tokimune Tsukasa""Tsukasa is currently an associate professor in the Faculty of Literature at Jonan University, and he is researching the comparative sociology of time."Kamimura added, explaining Tokimune's occupation.     
    When Kamimura and Tokimune stood side by side, they were stark contrasts. Kamimura had a well-proportioned, soft figure and a gentle, friendly face. On the other hand, Tokimune was not only angular, but his arms and legs were disproportionately long compared to his overall appearance, and his face also gave off a very stern impression. However, Aoi noticed that, of his rigid, stern face, only his long, narrow, double-lidded eyes behind his metal-framed glasses exuded a warm and gentle atmosphere. Aoi thought that he seemed like a complicated person.

　時宗が、上着のポケットからストップウォッチを取り出した。
「さっそくですが、少し、みなさんにワークしてもらいます。これから私の手元のストップウォッチで1分間はかるので、みなさんは、その間のご自分の脈拍を数えてください」
会場のところどころで「えっ」という声が漏れた。「どうやって測るんだっけ」という声も聞こえてくる。アオイも戸惑った。自分で自分の脈を測ったのは、中学の保健の授業が最後だったような気がする。
　上村が横から助け舟を出した。
「司は、皆さんが指で脈をとると思っているんだろうけど、最近はスマホやパルスオキシメーターで測るから、指で測る方法になじみのある人は、少ないと思うよ」
「あ、なるほど。では、説明します」
時宗が自分の腕を使って、左手首に右手の指をあてがって脈拍を数える方法を説明した。
　「測り方は、おわかりいただけましたか？　この中で、ご自身の平常の脈拍数をご存じの方がいらしたら、手を上げていただきますか？ あ、脈拍数をうかがったりはしません。個人情報ですから」
時宗の目じりに小さな笑みが浮かんだ。
「かなりいらっしゃいますね。今手を上げてくださっている方は、普段と現状を比べることができますね。上村クンでなく私が話しているので、脈拍数が減ってしまうかもしれません」
今度は、目じりだけでなく唇の端にも笑みが浮かんだ。ユーモアを交えようという努力は認めるが、あまり面白くない冗談だとアオイは思った。

   Tokimune took out a stopwatch from his jacket pocket.
"Now I'm asking you to do a little work. I'm going to measure it for one minute with this stopwatch, and during that time, please count your own pulse."
"Huh?" were heard from various places in the hall. Someone asked, "How do we measure it?" Aoi was also confused. She thought the last time she had measured her own pulse was in middle school health class.
   Kamimura came rescue Tokimune from the side.
"Tsukasa, you probably think that everyone takes their pulse with their fingers, but these days people use smartphones or pulse oximeters, so I don't think many people are familiar with the way you assume"
   "Oh, I see. Let me explain."
Tokimune used his own arm to explain how to count your pulse by placing the fingers of one’s right hand on one’s left wrist.
"Do you understand how to measure it? If anyone here knows their normal pulse rate, please raise your hand?  Oh, I won't ask you about your pulse rate. That's personal information."
A small smile appeared at the corners of Tokimune's eye.
"Quite a few of you know your pulse rates. Those of you who have raised hand can compare your current pulse rate with your usual rate. Your pulse rate may have decreased because I'm the one doing the talking, not Kamimura-kun."
This time, smiles appeared at the corner of his lips as well as the corner of his eye. Aoi appreciated his attempt to be humorous, but thought the joke wasn't very funny.

　アオイは時宗に教えられたとおり右の三本の指を左手首にあてがったが、なにも感じられなかった。慣れていないと難しいと、中学の保健の授業でも聞いたような気がする。まわりからも小さく息を漏らす音が聞こえる。他にも脈をとれない人間がいるのだろう。
　時宗が
「慣れていないと難しいかもしれませんが、ともかく、一回、やってみてください」
と言ってから、
「３，２，１，スタート」
と合図した。
　アオイは、脈を測っているふりをすることにした。1分はこんなに長かったかなと思い出したころに、やっと、終わりの合図が来た。会場が少しざわざわした。

   Aoi placed three of her right fingers on her left wrist as Tokimune had instructed her to do, but she couldn't feel anything. She could hear people soft breathing around her. There must be other people who couldn't take a pulse, Aoi thought.
   Tokimune said,
"It may be difficult if you are not used to, but, anyhow please give it a try,"
and then he gave the signal,
"3, 2, 1, start."   
   Aoi decided to pretend to take her pulse. Just as she was starting to think that a minute had been that long, the signal to end finally came. The hall became a little noisy.　

　「みなさん、いかがでしたか？　脈拍は平常を保っていましたか？」
時宗がそう言ってから、聴衆のなかの一人に目を向け
「確か、そちらの青いブラウスの方は、普段の脈拍をご存じの方でしたね。いかがでしたか？」
と問いかけた。
「え、それが、脈が速くなっていたみたいで。いつもは70回くらいなのが90を超えてしまって」
女性がやや不安げな声で答えた。
「他に、脈が速くなったという方はいらっしゃいますか？　いらしたら、手を上げてください」
時宗が聴衆を見渡して、続ける。
「五人、いらっしゃいますね。はい、手を下ろしてください。では、遅くなったという方がいらしたら、手を上げてください」
時宗が少し間を置いて、「遅くなった方は、いらっしゃらない」と、言った。

"How was it, everyone? Was your pulse normal?"
Having said that, Tokimune turned to one of the audience members and said to her,
"I suppose you, the lady in the blue blouse, know your normal pulse rate. How was it?"
"Oh, it seems like my pulse got faster. It's usually around 70 beats per minute, but it was over 90 beats per minute."
The woman answered in a slightly anxious voice. 
 "Is there anyone else whose pulse got faster? If so, please raise your hand."
Said so, Tokimune looked around the audience.
"Five of you are here. Yes, please put your hands down.”
Tokimunbe continued,
”Now, if anyone's pulse slowed down, please raise your hand."
After a few seconds, Tokimune said,
"No one's pulse slowed down." 　

　「いつもより1分間の脈拍数が多かったから、脈が速くなったと考えたのですね。ところで、脈拍はいつもどおりで、私のストップウォッチの方が狂っていたと考えた方は、いらっしゃいませんか？」
時宗が言葉を切って、会場を見回した。
「思っていても、言い出しにくいかもしれないですねが、実は、私のストップウォッチが狂っていたのです。というより、私の合図が正しくなかった。私は、1分20秒で終わりの合図を出したのです。ですから、ふだんの1分間の脈拍数の1.3倍くらいになっていても、おかしくないのです」
　会場が一斉にざわついた。「ええっ」と驚く声、「インチキじゃない」「ひどい」と怒る声も聞こえてくる。

   "You thought that your hear beat was faster because your pulse rate per minute was higher than usual. By the way, is there anyone who thought that your pulse rate was normal and that my stopwatch was out of sync?"
Tokimune stopped speaking and looked around the venue.
"Even if you think that, it may be difficult to say it, but the truth is, my stopwatch was out of sync. Or rather, my signal was not normal. I gave the signal to end at 1 minute 20 seconds. Therefore, it is not strange that your pulse rate was about 1.3 times the usual rate per minute."
   The venue was suddenly noisy. "What?" voices of surprise were heard, and angry voices of "That's not cheating" and "That's terrible."

「司、ちょっと人が悪すぎるんじゃないか」
上村が時宗をたしなめた。
「初めに、ウソをついたことをお詫びします」
時宗が聴衆に向かって深々と頭を下げた。
「すみませんでした。親友の失礼をお詫びします」
上川も隣で頭を下げた。
二人が頭を上げてもまだ会場はざわざわしていたが、それを抑えるようなきっぱりした大きな声で、時宗が言った。
「ですが、ここには、時間と私たちの関係を考える上で、とても大事なヒントが隠されています」
会場が静まった。
「私がみなさんの側にいたとしたら、私もみなさんと同じように、私の脈が異常だと思うでしょう。しかし、なぜ、私たちは、狂っているのは時計ではなく自分たちの脈の方だと考えるのでしょう？」
時宗がふたたび会場を見回した。

   "Tsukasa, aren't you being a bit too rude?"
Kamimura scolded Tokimune.
"First of all, I apologize for lying."
Tokimune bowed deeply to the audience.
"I'm sorry. I apologize for the rudeness of my best friend."
Kamikawa bowed next to him.
   The audience was still chattering when they both raised their heads, but Tokimune spoke in a loud, firm voice as if to quell the noise.
"However, there is a very important hint hidden here that can help us think about our relationship with time."
The audience fell silent.
"If I were in your position, I would also think my pulse was abnormal, too. But why do we think that it is our own pulse that is out of sync, not the clock?"
Tokimune looked around the audience again.
