時の巫女たち／3．作家・上村秋人　The Maidens of Time／3. Author Akito　Kamimura

　「郷」から戻った最初の土曜日、アオイは、瀟洒な作りの低層マンションとお洒落なカフェが建ち並ぶ都内の一角で、作家の上村秋人（カミムラアキト）が主催のイベント会場を探していた。
　上村秋人 のイベントに参加し、そこでの一部始終を「郷」に報告するというのが、「郷」で ”紫の采女”  から指示されたアオイの務めだった。

    On her first Saturday back from "Homeland", Aoi was searching for the venue for an event hosted by the writer Kamimura Akito in a part of Tokyo that exudes an elegant atmosphere with its rows of stylish low-rise apartment buildings and fashionable cafes. Aoi's duty, as instructed by the "Purple Uneme" at "Hopmeland", was to attend Kamimura Akito's event and report everything that would happen there to "Homeland".

　”紫の采女” は、イベントへの参加券――スマホにダウンロードできる電子的なもの――をアオイ名義で入手していて、それをアオイのスマホに転送してきた。「郷」は、つねに、アオイの居場所を把握している。
　母は、毎月、「郷」から指定された私書箱に最新の連絡先を通知していた。アオイが中学生の時、「そんな連絡はやめて『郷』と縁切りしちゃえば？」と軽い気持ちで持ち掛けたときに母の顔に浮かんだ異様な表情を、アオイは今でも覚えている。アオイは二度とその話を持ち出さなかったし、母の死後は、アオイ自ら自分の連絡先を報告し続けていた。

   "Purple Uneme" had obtained an event participation ticket in Aoi's name - a digital one that could be downloaded to a smartphone - and had forwarded it to Aoi's smartphone. "Homeland" always knew where Aoi was.
   Every month, her mother sent her latest contact information to a private mailbox specified by "Homeland".  When Aoi was in middle school, she lightly suggested to her mother, "Why don't you stop contacting "Homeland" and cut ties with it ?"  Aoi still rememberd the unusual look that appeared on her mother's face at that moment. Aoi never brought up the subject again, and after her mother's death, Aoi continued to send her her own contact information.

　イベント会場は、海外雑貨店とカフェの間の狭い路地の奥にあった。路地が切れた先に、路地の狭さからは思いもつかなかった広い間口の建屋が現れ、自動ドアの手前に「上村秋人とあなたの ”時をめぐる集い”」と記された看板が立っていた。

   The event venue was at the back of a narrow alley between an overseas goods store and a cafe. At the end of the alley, a wide building appeared, which was unexpected considering how narrow the alley was. In front of the automatic doors stood a sign that read "A gathering of Akito Kamimura and you about time."

  　エントランスの奥のドアを開けると、その向こうは、50人ほどが着席できそうなカンファレンス・ルームで、イベント開始の20分前だというのに、ほぼ満席の状態だった。ほとんど小説を読まないアオイも上村秋人が若い女性に人気の作家とは知っていたが、女性限定イベントと指定されているわけでもないのに、参加者に男性をひとりも見かけないことに驚いた。

　A door at the back of the entrance revealed a conference room that could seat about 50 people, which was nearly full even though it was only 20 minutes before the event was due to start. Even Aoi, who rarely read novels, knew that Uemura Akito was a popular author among young women, but she was surprised that she didn't see a single man among the attendees, even though the event wasn't designated as women-only.

  ほとんど会話の声は聞こえなかったが、静かな中にも、イベントの開催時刻が近づくにつれて女性たちの興奮が高まるのが感じられ、アオイは少し息苦しくなってきた。
　エントランスからのドアを開けて上村秋人が登場すると、室内にどよめきが起こった。しかし、アオイの目には、上村秋人は、世間一般に好感を持たれやすいタイプの男性の一人にしか見えなかった。
　ここに集った女性たちはいったい彼の何にそれほど惹かれるのだろうとアオイは不思議に思ったが、すぐに、自分がとんでもなくピントを外しているかもしれないと気づいた。時宗は作家なのだ。作家は、世に出た小説によって評価されるものだ。時宗の作品を一つも読んでいないアオイに彼の真価が分かるはずがないのだった。

　There was barely a sound of conversation, but even in the silence, Aoi could sense the women's growing excitement as the time for the event drew near, and she began to feel a little short of breath. A murmur rang out in the room when Kamimura Akito opened the door to the entrance and appeared. However, to Aoi, Kamimura Akito just seemed like one of those men who are generally well-liked. Aoi wondered what it was about him that attracted the women gathered there so much, but soon realized that she might have been completely off the mark. Tokimune is a writer. Writers are judged by the novels they publish. Having never read any of Tokimune's works, Aoi had no way of understanding his true worth.

　上村が話し始めた。聴衆を前に講演するというより、参加者一人ひとりに直接語りかけるような静かな語りだが、低音がよく響く声の効果もあって、室内が上村の語りで満たされる。
　話のテーマは恋愛談義だった。具体的なエピソードを交えて、20代女性が恋愛でぶつかりやすい壁について語っていく。その話の運びが実に巧みだとアオイは思った。アオイの年頃になると、人生、そうそう、うまい話はないことがわかっている。上村は、人生の苦いリアリティを感じさせる辛口の話の中に、ほのかに甘い将来への期待をまぜこんでいく。
　この語り口が聴き手の女性たちの感情を揺さぶっているのは確かで、アオイの右隣の女性などは、話の苦みが増していくにつれ息をつめ身体を固くし、希望の光が射し出すと息をつき肩の力を抜くのが、アオイに伝わってくるほどだった。

   Kamimura began to speak. Rather than lecturing to an audience, he spoke quietly, as if speaking directly to each participant, but with the effect of his low-pitched voice, the room was filled with Kamimura's words.    The topic of his talk was love. Using specific anecdotes, he talked about the obstacles that women in their twenties often face in romance. Aoi thought the way he delivered the story was very skillful. When you reach Aoi's age, you know that there are no easy stories in life. Kamimura mixed in some sweet hopes for the future into his harsh stories that conveyed the bitter reality of life.    It was clear that his way of speaking stirred the emotions of the women listening to him, and Aoi could almost hear the woman sitting to Aoi's right holding her breath and stiffening her body as the story became more bitter, but then breathing and relaxing her shoulders when a ray of hope began to shine through.

　もっとも、話の内容で、アオイにピンとくるものはなかった。アオイにとって、恋愛は、まったく縁のない事柄だった。そもそも男性というのが、アオイには、現実味のない存在なのだ。
　アオイの父親はアオイが生まれる前に病気で亡くなっていた。祖父母も早くに亡くなり、父と母は一人っ子だったから叔父もおらず、アオイは、成熟した男性に接することなく子供時代を過ごした。小学校の男性教師が唯一例外と言えば例外だが、児童と教師はそれほど親しく付き合うものではない。まして、アオイは、不慣れな男性を避けがちだったから、なおさらだ。

   However, nothing about the content of his talk resonated with Aoi. Romance was something that had absolutely no connection to Aoi. To begin with, men were unrealistic to Aoi. Aoi's father had died of illness before Aoi was born. Her grandparents had also died early, and as her parents were only children, she had no uncles, so Aoi spent her childhood without ever coming into contact with mature men. The only exception was the male teachers at elementary school. But pupils and teachers usually do not get very close.  This was especially true for Aoi, who tended to avoid unfamiliar men.

　そのようにして育ち、親族とか血のつながりといった感覚が極めて薄かったところにもってきて、ただ一人の肉親だった母まで失ってしまうと、なんだか、自分が人間という種族に属しているという感覚が薄らいでくる。
　アオイは、自分が21年前の7月4日に突然、ペロッと地上に現れた生き物だと思ってみることがある。すると、とても自由なような身軽なような気分になる。母が父と出会ってあれこれあって結婚し母が妊娠し……といった面倒な前振りがなくスッキリしている。セックス不要だから生臭くもない。現実にそんなことはあり得ないが、そう思うと自分が楽しくいられるのだから、自分的にはそういう整理で良いと、結構、本気で思っている。

   Having grown up with an extremely weak sense of kinship or blood ties, and then losing her mother, her only blood relative, Aoi came to feel as if she had not belonged to the human race.
   Aoi sometimes imagined herself as a creature that suddenly appeared on earth on the Fourth of July 21 years ago. When she did this, Aoi felt very free and out of burden. It was neat, because there was no complicated setup like her mother meeting her father, their getting married, and her mother getting pregnant and so on. There was no need for sex, so it was free from animality.  Such a pheonomenon was impossible in reality, but if thinking of it this way made her happy, there was no reeason to deny the idea, Aoi thought.

 上村は質疑応答も含めて90分ほど話したところで、45分の休憩をとった。45分と聞くと長く感じられるが、聴衆は全員女性なので、洗面所の混雑を考えると、このくらいあって丁度だとアオイは思った。こういうところに、上村の女性ファンへの慣れが現れているとアオイは感じた。

   After talking for about 90 minutes, including the Q&A session, Kamimura took a 45-minute break. 45 minutes may seem long, but since the audience was all female, and considering the congestion in the washrooms, Aoi felt that this was just the right amount of time. Aoi felt that this was an example of Kamimura's familiarity with female fans.
