時の巫女たち／2．歓 迎　The Maidens of Time／2. Welcoming

前回／Previous Episode：

　アオイが奥の社殿へと歩き出すと、社殿の前に鮮やかな朱色の人影が現れ、左腕を大きく前に伸ばした。手には棒のようなものが握られている。
「あれはもしかして弓？　いや、あり得ない」
とアオイが心の中でつぶやいた次の瞬間、前方の空中でヒューという風切り音が響き、目の前で長い矢が降ってきた。ザクっと音を立て、矢が草地に突き刺さる。驚くアオイの頭上で風切り音が続けて起こり、左右の草地に、さらに二本の矢が音を立てて刺ささった。

   As Aoi began to walk towards the shrine at the back, a bright vermilion figure appeared in front of the shrine, stretching the left arm out in front. A stick-like object was clutched in the hand.
"Could that be a bow? No, that can't be,"
Aoi muttered to herself, and the next moment, a whoosh of wind echoed through the air ahead, and a long arrow rained down in front of her. With a crunch, the arrow pierced the grass. The sound of wind continued to cut above the head of Aoi who was shocked, and two more arrows pierced the grass on either side of her with a clunk.

　本当に矢を射られ恐怖だったが、それよりも、「人を呼びだしておいて何と失礼な」という怒りの方が強かった。それに、母は、「郷」から逃げれば禍を招くと言った。ここで射手に背を向けると、さらに事態を悪化させる――「郷」は、そんな場所かもしれないのだ。
　アオイは腹を括った。まっすぐ、射手に向かって進んで行った。射手はアオイに弓を向けつづけていたが、新たな矢を射てはこない。
　射手の目の前まで来た。筒袖の上着とズボンの上にポンチョ式の朱色の貫頭衣をまとい、黒々した髪を少年のような短髪にまとめた若い女性だった。アオイと似たような年恰好に見える。

   Although she was terrified by the real arrows, she was more angry at how rude it was for "Homeland" to let the archer shoot Aoi after summoning her. Besides, her mother had said that running away from "Homeland" would bring misfortune. Turning her back on the archer now would only make the situation worse -- "Homeland" might be such a place.
   Aoi made up her mind. She walked straight towards the archer. The archer continued to aim his bow at Aoi, but did not shoot any new arrows.
   She came right in front of the archer. She was a young woman wearing a vermilion poncho-style tunic over her long-sleeved jacket and trousers, with her dark hair tied up in a short style like a boy. She looked to be about the same age as Aoi.

　射手の後方の社殿から、白い着物姿で、これもまたアオイと同じくらいの年頃に見える女性が出てきた。
「サキ、もうよい」
着物の女性がすきとおった声で言い、射手が弓を下ろした。二人は年恰好は同じに見えるが、着物の女性の方が、地位が上らしい。着物の女性がアオイに声をかけてきた。
「山科の娘ですね。よく来ました。長老たちがお待ちです」
アオイは
「とんだ歓迎で」
と言いたいのを抑えて、目礼して返した。
　射手の女性が、獲物を狙う捕食動物のような鋭い視線を向けてきた。アオイは、今度は黙っていられなくなった。射手に微笑みかけながら
「お迎え、ありがとうございました」
と応じると、射手は、いっそう険しい目でアオイをひと睨みしてから、くるりと踝を返して歩み去った。

   From the shrine behind the archer, a woman in a pure white kimono, who also looked to be about Aoi's age, came out.
"Saki, that's enough,"
The woman in kimono said in a clear voice, and the archer put down her bow. The woman in kimono，then, called out to Aoi.
"You must be the daughter of Yamashina. Welcome. The elders are waiting for you."
Aoi refrained herself from saying "What a welcome," and gave a small nod in response.
  When Aoi passed by the archer, she turned towards Aoi, a sharp gaze like a predator stalking its prey.
This time, Aoi could no longer keep quiet. She smiled at the archer and replied,
"Thank you for welcoming me."
The archer turned even fiercer eyes at Aoi and walked away.

　アオイは、着物の女性に続いて社殿に入り、靴を脱ぎ、三十畳敷きはありそうな広い畳の間に上がった。真新しいイグサの匂いがツンと鼻をついた。畳の間の奥に、着物姿の三人の女性が正座していた。女性たちの真っ白な髪、深く皺のきざまれた顔、鶴のように枯れた身体つきは相当な高齢を感じさせたが、一方で、背筋をピンと伸ばして端座している姿からは、若さと力強さのようなものが漂ってくる。アオイは、三人の女性が発するこの雰囲気に覚えがあった。四歳の春、母とアオイの前に現れた女性が漂わせていたのと同じだ。

   Following the woman in her plain white kimono into the shrine, Aoi took off her shoes and stepped into a spacious tatami room that was probably about 30 tatami mats in size. The pungent smell of brand new rush grass hit her nose. At the back of the tatami room, three women in kimono were sitting upright. Their pure white hair, deeply wrinkled faces, and shriveled physiques like cranes suggested they were quite old, but at the same time, their straight-backed, upright postures exuded a youthful and powerful presence. Aoi felt a familiar vibe from the three women. It was the same aura that the woman who had appeared before her mother and Aoi had given off that spring when she was four years old.

　着物の女性にうながされ、アオイは三人の前に進み正座した。
「山科の娘、大きくなったな」
中央の女性が、しわがれているがハリのある不思議な声をかけてきた。
「母親のことは残念なことをした」
母が三年前に他界したことへの儀礼的な挨拶と解し、
「恐れ入ります」
と神妙に答えて頭を下げる。
「下界で大学に行っているそうだな。『化外の者』のお前にとって、下界の学問を身に着けることは、身すぎ世すぎの役に立つことであろう。良く学ぶがよい」
下界とは一般社会を指し、「化外の民」とは、「郷」に生れながら「郷」を追放された者を指す。いずれも「郷」の人々が軽蔑をこめて使う言葉だ。
「ずいぶん上からなお言葉で」
と胸の内で辟易しながら、アオイは、ここでも神妙に頭を下げる。出来ることなら、事を荒立てずにさっさと用件を聞いて、ここを離れたかった。
   Urged by the woman in white kimono, Aoi stepped forward and sat upright in front of the three.
"You've grown up, Yamashina's daughter."
The woman in the middle spoke in a hoarse yet firm voice.
"I'm sorry about your mother."
Understanding this as a ceremonial greeting for her mother's death three years ago, Aoi bowed solemnly.
The woman continued.
"I hear you're attending university in the lower world. For you, a 'purgee,' it will be extremely useful to learn about the knowledge of the lower world. Study hard."
The lower world refers to the general society, and 'purgee' refers to those who were born in the 'Homeland' but were expelled. Both are derogatory terms used by the people of the 'Homeland' with contempt.
Aoi, although feeling sick of this condescending way to speak, bowed solemnly again because she didn’t want to cause any fuss. If possible, she wanted to know what the elders want form her as soon as possible and leave here soon.

　右端の女性が話しかけてきた。見かけからは想像もつかない太い、ハリのある声だった。
「お前の母が一度も『郷』の役に立つ機会がないまま世を去ったのは残念なことだったが、それが『化外の者』の常である。しかし、幸運にも、お前には、『郷』の役に立つ機会が巡ってきた。喜べ」
ここで「ありがとうございます」と言えれば、演技として完璧だろうなとアオイは思ったが、そこまで迎合する気分にはなれず、ただ、頭を下げることにした。
「詳しいことは、紫の采女から聞くとよい」
右端の女性がそう言うと、三人は一斉に立ち上がり、広間から退出していった。後には、アオイと、アオイをここに案内した女性が残された。
　女性がアオイに向き直り、
「私が”紫の采女”です。あなたの務めを、私から説明します」
と言った。

   The woman on the far right spoke. Her voice was deep and powerful, something you would never imagine from her appearance.
"It's unfortunate that your mother passed away without ever having the chance to be of use to 'Homeland',  but that is the norm for 'purgee'. However, fortunately, you are going to be given an opportunity to be of use to 'Homeland'. Be happy."
Aoi thought that if she could say "Thank you" here, it would be a perfect performance, but she wasn't in the mood to pander that much, so she simply bowed her head.
"You can ask Purple Uneme for more details,"
the woman on the far right said, and the three of them stood up and left the hall.  Aoi and the woman in kimono whd had led Aoi here were left behind.
The woman in kimono turned to Aoi and said, "I am Purple Uneme. I will explain your duties."
