🍰 ミニストーリー：「デザート“サービス”の落とし穴」
ニューヨークの小さなイタリアンレストラン。
期間限定で、セットメニューにティラミスがついてくるらしい。
メニューの端には“Service charge 15% may apply.”の文字。
あやこ："Is dessert service?"（デザートは“サービス”ですか？）
店員："Yes, the service charge is included."（サービス料は込みです）」
あやこ：「え、料金じゃなくて…無料かどうか知りたいんだけど…」
横で見ていた友達が助け舟。
友達："She’s asking if the dessert is complimentary or included in the set."
店員："Ah, got it! Dessert is complimentary today — it’s on the house."
その瞬間、あやこは氣づきます。
英語の service は「接客・サービス料」。
日本語の「“サービス”＝無料」は通じない。
言いたいのは complimentary / on the house / included だったのでした。
🍰「サービス」は和製英語。
「無料」は complimentary / on the house / free
「セットに含まれる」は included / comes with ～
free service は「無料の修理・配送などの“サービス”」の意味。
“Is dessert service?” は不自然なので、“Is dessert free?” と聞けばOK。
