88歳おじいちゃんの渡米記🇺🇸第五日目「プライスクラブ探検」

米寿渡米記 - 第五日目（１９９５年２月２３日）

２３日、１０時２０分起床。正午、家主のお婆さんと対面。人が良さそう（今迄フランス旅行していたそうである）。阿瀬君は国際免許を取得して来たので、今日からレンタカーでの行動になる。今日はシスコとは反対のサンノゼ行きである。今日はサンノゼ州立大学を見学する。スタンフォード大学の比では無いが、やはり広い。ここは史子の友人の母校である。一巡りして帰路についたが、途中道を間違えて又一周するというハプニングもあった。

Woke up at 10:20. We met the landlady at noon. She seems like a nice woman. (She had just returned from a trip to France.) Mr. Ase had gotten an international driver's license before leaving Japan, so now we were able to get around by automobile. We set out for San Jose, in the opposite direction from San Francisco. We saw San Jose State University. The campus is not as big as Stanford's, but it is still large. This was Ayako's friend's alma mater. We took a look around and then headed for home, but got lost and had to drive around a bit.

帰途何処かでショッピングをしようとPrice Clubという店に入る。その売り場の広いこと。又品物の豊富なこと。あたかも卸問屋の様で物価は日本と比較にならない。仮にコーラを例に取ると２ダース（２４本）日本円にして300円。米は10 kg 600円である。又駐車場は日本の学校なら三校位建ちそうである。

On the way back, we decided to go shopping and stopped at a store called Price Club. The place was huge! And there were so many things to buy! It looked just like a wholesaler's warehouse, and the prices were beyond comparison with Japan. Cola, for example--one case (24 cans) cost the equivalent of 300 yen. Rice was 600 yen for 10 kilos. And three Japanese schools could have fit in the parking lot.
