GEC4年生卒業プロジェクトと留学体験
神奈川大学外国語学部英語英文学科です。今回はGEC 4年生 鈴木結さんとのインタビューをご紹介します。鈴木さんは派遣交換留学でタンマサート大学（タイ）で学び、卒業プロジェクトはルーツである沖縄におけるアイデンティティをテーマに執筆されました。
英語で行われたインタビューを和訳付きでお届けします！
Could you give a brief self-introduction? まず簡単に自己紹介をお願いします。
I am originally from Okinawa, Japan and I am studying in the GEC program. I am specifically taking "Global Culture" which is a class taught by Dr Corey Wallace. In my first year of university, I lived in the international dormitory called the Kuritaya Akademia. Since I started my university education during the COVID-19 pandemic, I recall going through some hard times. But despite the challenge, I was able to make new friends. Overall, I feel I have quite a positive impression of my first year of university.
私は沖縄出身で、GECプロフラムに所属しています。今はコオリ・ウォレス先生の「Global Culture」という授業を履修しています。大学一年生の時は栗田谷アカデメイアという国際寮に住んでいました。私の大学生活はコロナ渦に始まったので、辛い時期もありました。でもそんな中、新しい友達もできたり、振り返ればとてもポジティブな大学一年を過ごせたと思います。
How was your GEC Study Abroad program? GEC留学生活はどうでしたか？
In my second year, I went to study in Oregon for 4 months as part of the GEC Study Abroad program. We were divided into different levels based on our English ability, and there I learned English grammar, speaking, and writing. I enjoyed hiking and going to the coast during my study abroad, which was very fun!
2年生の時にオレゴン大学に4ヶ月間語学留学しました。クラスは英語のレベルに応じて分けられていたので、自分のレベルにあった英文法、スピーキング、そしてライティングの授業を受けることができました。留学中はハイキングに行ったり、海辺に遊びに行ったりして、とても楽しかったです！
I also got to go to Thailand for one semester as an exchange student after going on the GEC study abroad program. I studied at Thammasat University, and this was the first time I went to Southeast Asia or lived in a country where they spoke a language that was completely new to me. I also received a JASSO scholarship during my study abroad which supported me financially.
GEC留学から帰国後はタイのタンマサート大学に一学期間、交換留学に行きました。東南アジアに行くのも初めてで、今まで学んだことのない言語が主流である国に住むのも初めてでした。交換留学の際はJASSOの奨学金が支給されました。
Why did you choose to go to Thailand as an exchange student? 交換留学先としてタイを選んだ理由は？
It was quite straightforward, I wanted to visit Thailand. I was also interested in studying Thai, which was a new language for me to learn. Growing up in Okinawa, I was also interested in going to a country with a strong tourism sector.
シンプルに、タイに行きたかったんです。今まで学んできた言語と大きく違うタイ語も学びたいと思い、留学を決意しました。また、沖縄で生まれ育ったので、同じく観光業に力を入れているタイという国にも興味がありました。
How did you find your exchange program? 派遣交換留学はどうでしたか？
It was great! During my exchange program, I found my roommate on Facebook, who was from Russia. We had some disagreements and at times we clashed because we came from different cultural backgrounds. But at the end of my study abroad program, we actually travelled to the coast together.
最高でした！留学中、フェイスブックでルームメイトを見つけました。ロシア人の留学生で、何度もカルチャーの違いから意見が食い違うことがあり、時には衝突することもありました。でも、留学生活の最後には一緒に海辺に遊びに行ったりして、楽しい時間を一緒に過ごすことができました。
What did you do for your graduation project? 卒業プロジェクトのテーマは何でしたか？
I wanted to do my graduation project that was related to my major, and as I was thinking about it, I realized that I wanted to research Okinawa where I am from. I wanted people in Japan in general to know more about the situation in Okinawa, and I decided to do my graduation research project on identity, specifically about dual identities among Okinawans which are different from those in mainland Japan. In particular, I was interested in the Okinawan American community and the so-called "Nikkei" people such as Okinawan Brazilians and Okinawan Latin Americans.
卒業プロジェクトは自分自身の専攻に関連するテーマについて取り組みたいと考えていました。プロジェクトについて考えていくうちに、故郷である沖縄についてリサーチしてみたいと思うようになりました。本土の人たちにも沖縄の現状についてもっと知ってほしいという思いから、「アイデンティティ」をテーマに卒業プロジェクトを作成することにしました。卒業プロジェクトでは本土の人たちとは異なる沖縄人の「dual identity（二重アイデンティティ）」についてリサーチしました。私は特に沖縄のアメリカ人コミュニティやブラジル、ラテン・アメリカにルーツを持つ沖縄県系人、いわゆる「日系人」に興味がありました。
Through my research, I found that there are different levels of Okinawan identity between Okinawan Americans and Nikkei Okinawans and that the Nikkei people have a much stronger Okinawan identity. I am actually making a video that includes the interviews that I did as part of the graduation project.
卒業プロジェクトのためのリサーチを通じて、アメリカ系沖縄人や沖縄県系人の間でもアイデンティティに違いがあることに気づきました。どちらかと言うと、沖縄県系人の方が沖縄アイデンティティが強いと感じました。実は今、インタビューを収録した動画を卒業プロジェクトの一環として制作しています。
Through my graduation project, I wanted people to know about how we have different identities. I wanted people to understand that Okinawa is not just a tourist spot and that we have a dark history and as a result, we still carry a heavy burden.
卒業プロジェクトでは、沖縄人は複数のアイデンティティを持っていること、そして沖縄が単なる観光地ではなく、暗い歴史を持ち、その重荷を今もなお背負っているのだということを伝えたかったです。
For me personally, I identify as Japanese as well as Okinawan, but some Okinawan Americans tend to identify more as Americans rather than Japanese. In my interviews, they told me how they felt more American because of how they grew up and how much easier they found getting into the American culture and learning English.
私は自分は「日本人」であると同時に「沖縄人」だと感じています。しかし実際にインタビューしたアメリカ系沖縄人は自分は「日本人」というよりも「アメリカ人」であると感じていると言っていました。育った環境や、英語やアメリカのカルチャーの方が馴染みやすいからそう感じるのだとも話していました。
The majority of Okinawans living in Latin America were not born in Okinawa, but because of that, they worked hard to maintain the Okinawan culture. Many Okinawans had a hard time starting their new lives in Latin America, often starting from nothing. During those hard times, the Okinawan culture seemed to have given them strength, such as our music, language, and food.
現在南米に住む大半の沖縄県系人は、沖縄で生まれたわけではありません。しかしだからこそ、沖縄文化を守ろうと一生懸命努力してきました。南米に渡った当初、ゼロからのスタートであった新しい生活は非常に厳しく、沖縄出身者は大変な苦労を強いられました。そうした困難の中で、沖縄の音楽や言語、食べ物といった文化が心の支えになったといわれています。
Is there a difference between the Okinawan culture that you are familiar with and that of the ones you see in Latin America? 南米の沖縄文化と沖縄の沖縄文化には、どんな違いがありますか？
I think that when tourists visit Okinawa, they are looking for the "American culture" that is in Okinawa. In the post-war period, we were forced to adopt the American culture, and that is why we still have American culture in Okinawa. For example, we have the American village where you can find American diners.
おそらく沖縄を訪れる観光客は、どちらかというと沖縄にある「アメリカ文化」に興味があると感じます。戦後、アメリカ文化を受け入れざるを得なかったため、沖縄には今もなおアメリカ文化が色濃く残っています。例えば、沖縄にあるアメリカンビレッジには、アメリカンダイナーがたくさんあります。
In contrast, in Latin America such as Bolivia, Peru, Argentina and Brazil, their Okinawan culture is "old". They use old Okinawan phrases that I think our grandparents use. They also participate in traditional religious and cultural activities, take part in traditional festivals and sing old songs. This is very different to the Okinawan culture of today, which is more Americanized.
一方、ボリビア、ペルー、アルゼンチン、ブラジルなどの南米諸国には、どちらかというと「古い」沖縄文化が残っています。私たちの祖父母が使っていたような昔ながらの沖縄の表現が使われていたり、沖縄の伝統的な文化行事や宗教行事、お祭りに参加したり、古い歌を歌ったりもします。これは現在の沖縄で見られる沖縄文化とはかなり異なります。現代の沖縄文化はアメリカ文化の影響を強く受けていると思います。
I graduated from a high school in Okinawa, but I did go to study in a high school in Ecuador where I also learned Spanish. That is where I got into the Nikkei culture, too. I went to Ecuador using the Prefectural funds (県費制度), essentially getting financial support to go and study abroad.
私自身、沖縄の高校を卒業しましたが、高校生の時県費制度を利用し、南米のエクアドルの学校へ留学しました。そこでスペイン語も学ぶとともに、日系文化に触れ、興味を持つようになりました。
Your English is excellent. How did you study English? 素晴らしい英語力ですね。英語はどうやって学ばれましたか？
I am mostly self-taught. When I went to Ecuador, I made friends with people from other countries and in order to communicate with them, I had to use English. I guess I also enjoy listening to Western music.
ほとんど独学です。エクアドルに行った際、いろいろな国から来た人たちと交流する機会がありましたが、共通のコミュニケーション手段は英語でしたので、英語を使わなくてはやっていけない環境でした。あとは、洋楽も好きなので、英語に触れる機会が多かったのではないかと思います。
What are your plans after graduation? 卒業後の進路はもう決まっていますか？
I am going to work for a company in Okinawa. The company is working for the U.S. military. We manage their buildings and construction at the military base. I was interested in using my language skills and learning more about the community within the U.S. military base.
私は沖縄に戻り、建設会社で働く予定です。この会社は、米軍基地の建物の建設やメンテナンスを主に手がけています。この会社に就職したいと思った理由は、まず自分の英語スキルを活かせると思ったからです。また、米軍基地のコミュニティについてももっと知りたいと思い、この会社に就職することに決めました。
I only started to consider moving back to Okinawa after my study abroad experience. I personally prefer to live in a small town rather than a big city. I'm from Okinawa and I love the beaches in general, so I realized I always missed the ocean. I also wanted to make a contribution and give back to Okinawa.
大学卒業後に沖縄に戻ろうと思い始めたのは留学を終えてからでした。個人的には都会に住むより、小さな町に住む方が好きだったのだと横浜に住んでみて気付きました。沖縄出身なので、ビーチも大好きですし、いつも海が恋しかったんです。沖縄に貢献したいと思い、Uターン就職することにしました。
