“The Only Way to Improve Your Writing Is to Write—Even When It’s Scary”

Introduction: I Didn’t Always Love Writing
Do you enjoy writing?
I used to say no. Writing felt hard, uncomfortable—even intimidating. But over time, I began to understand why. I also found a space called note, where writing slowly turned into something enjoyable, even fulfilling.
The Past: Why Writing Was So Hard for Me
When I looked back, I realized that I had grown up suppressing my emotions.
As a child of Japan’s Showa era, I was seen as strong-willed and self-centered—traits that didn’t fit the mold of a “good” child. I was often scolded or even punished, and over time, I stopped showing how I really felt.
So when it came time to express myself, I froze. I constantly questioned:
“Is it okay to feel this way?”
“Will someone get mad if I say this?”
Even blogging stirred up those old fears. Writing meant confronting emotions I had buried long ago.
The Shift: Finding Courage and My Own Voice
But once I became aware of that fear, something changed.
I started to write a little more honestly. It wasn’t easy, and there are still things I find difficult—like giving instant feedback after seminars. Maybe it’s the pressure to respond perfectly, right away.
And yet, even with those struggles, I kept writing. I blogged on Ameblo for eight years. And now, I post daily on note.
In the beginning, it felt like a challenge. But now, I understand the quiet strength of simply continuing.
The Message: Write Anyway—That’s How You Grow
So, how can you improve your writing?
Write. Even if it’s scary.
Write what’s real.
Write as you are.
And if you can, do it every day.
I started out as just a mom. But writing helped me reach people, run events, and build a new kind of life. Social media, at its best, is a tool for connection and possibility.
The only way to become a better writer is to write. Scared or not—just write.
And I plan to keep doing just that.
