「肉は禁止されるべきか？」 社会問題英文エッセイ

社会問題英文エッセイシリーズ、今回は、「肉は禁止されるべきか？」です。

日本ではあまり「controversial」なイメージはないかもしれませんが、アメリカでは、ベジタリアンやヴィーガンに関する議論は日本に比べて非常に活発で、何を食べるかが個人のライフスタイルや価値観の表明にもなるようです。

そこで今回は、肉食の賛否について、書いてみました。

それでは、まずは、何も見ずに書いた初稿が以下になります。

今回は、それぞれ、制限時間を30分、両方で計1時間に設定して書きました。

反対派の方は、「prohibition」という名詞形が出てこず、時間切れになりました苦笑

◆　Should meat be banned?

◇　Pro

Now that not only human rights but also rights of animals become recognized by this modern society, it is natural to protect livestocks. Consequently, I believe that meat should be banned for the following reasons.
Firstly, it is morally wrong to unnecessarily kill any life. Since science has proved that animals feel pain as human beings do, it is extremely cruel to butcher animals without applying anesthesia to them. Raising lives for the purpose of eventually killing and eating them is ethically unpardonable.
Furthermore, human beings do not require the nutritions derived from animal meat. Vegetables and fruits and crops can provide all the nutritions human lives need. Moreover, modern technology facilitates agriculture to massively increase the supply of crops. These facts substantiate that killing animals for meat is unnecessary.
Finally, the natural food chain should be maintained. Human beings have already undermined ecosystem by destroying forests and contaminating countless rivers and seas, which leads to killing a limitless number of fish and animals. Under these circumstances, killing cows and pigs and chickens just for meat is inexcusable.
For the aforementioned reasons, I believe that it is a duty of human beings to save livestocks from being slaughtered. Hence, meat should be banned.

Although it is often said that meat should be banned, I object to it for the following reasons.
Firstly, the prohibit of meat will have a severe impact on economy. It is unavoidable for farms and butchers and any workers engaged in livestock industry to go bankrupt and become unemployed if meat is banned. This is unacceptable, considering that unemployment is already a serious issue.
Furthermore, gastronomic pleasure is a fundamental human right. It is ethically wrong to deprive people of this right. Moreover, it is widely reported that some people become more prone to mental depression if they do not eat meat. For certain people, meat is not only an option but also indispensable nutrition.
Finally, the natural food chain will be undermined. If eating meat is banned, the number of cows and pigs will increase dramatically, and they will eat much grass; consequently, there will be a severe shortage of grass, and many herbivores will be in the verge of extinction. This means that banning meat will deteriorate ecosystem.
While some people say that eating meat is ethically wrong, the ethics should apply only to themselves. No one has the right to impose any moral values on other people. Hence, for the reasons stated above, I do not believe that meat should be banned.

こんな感じで、それぞれ30分の時間制限を設けましたが、一番心残りなのは、上述のとおり「prohibition」という名詞形が出てこず、「the prohibit of」と間違っていることがわかっていながら、そこでタイムアップになってしまったことです。

これは間違いなく、もし試験だったら、文法のセクションで減点されてしまうと思うので、くそ〜という悔し気持ちが・・・苦笑

間違っているのがわかっていてタイムアップは悔しいですね。
