社会問題エッセイ、今回は「SNS検閲の賛否」です。

SNSはいまや社会現象で、オーストラリアでは16歳未満の使用を禁止する法律ができたり、他人の「盛れた瞬間」ばかりを目にすることでメンタルヘルスに深刻な影響を及ぼす危険性が指摘されたり、一部の人が政治利用したり、多くの議論があります。

そこで、このトピックを書いてみました。

Nowadays the requirement of censorship on social media has been mentioned by many people, I agree with them for the following reasons.
Firstly, individuals should be protected from libels. There are uncountable numbers of personal insults on social media, and some of the users committed suicide because of them. The protection of human lives must be the first priority. Hence, the censorship of social media is indispensable.
Furthermore, fake news should be removed from social media. Deceiving news reports are a serious issue. For instance, certain individuals could harbor grudge on certain race because of fake news; this could facilitate racism and aggravate international relationships. Under these circumstances, social media should be severely censored.
Finally, uncensored social media could deteriorate democracy. Certain influential people could lead people to some political actions by the manipulation of social media. This could be tantamount to oligarchy because a few influential people could control politics by social media. This is unpardonable because democracy should be maintained at any cost; consequently, the censorship is inevitable.
While some people oppose it in the name of freedom of speech, however, the freedom does not means that anyone can say or write anything. Human lives and correctness of news reports and democracy must be protected. In conclusion, I believe that social media should be censored.

Now that certain people insist for the censorship on social media, I firmly oppose it for the following reasons.
Firstly, modern society should be based on freedom of speech. Any censorship on social media is tantamount to the impeachment on this fundamental human right and must not be allowed.
Moreover, if social media is censored excessively, the number of users would dramatically decrease and it will have severe impact on economy because social media is now one of the most profitable enterprises in the world. There is no justifiable reason to restrict lucrative business especially when the international capitalism is in this unstable state.
Finally, excessive restriction on social media could lead to a dictatorship and a totalitarian government. As slippery slope argument states, once any means of censorship commences, it is not difficult to imagine that the law would be misused. For instance, certain politicians could begin to remove anything that is inconvenient for them and only things that are convenient for the government would remain, which means dictatorship and totalitarianism. This is inexcusable by any means.
While some say that the censorship of social media is required in order to protect people from libels and fake news, that is the role of technology, such as automatic filtration of harmful contents, rather than the censorship. Hence, for the aforementioned reasons, I firmly oppose the censorship on social media.
