You find a beautiful local ramen shop or a traditional craft store, have an amazing time, and then... you're told, "No credit cards, cash only." Why?! Don't panic. In this article, I will explain the smart way to handle money in Japan

◆現金が必要な場所を覚える（Beware the "Analog Desert"）

2026年でもアナログの砂漠は存在します。以下の場所ではほぼ必ず現金が必要です。

• 神社仏閣: 拝観料や御朱印。

• 地元の飲食店: 古い券売機がある小さならーめん店など。

• 地方: 田舎のバスや小さな商店。

• ガチャガチャ・ゲームセンター: あのカプセルトイはいまだに小銭が大好きです！

Even in 2026, digital deserts exist. You MUST have cash at these places:

• Temples and Shrines: For entrance fees and "Goshuin" (stamps).

• Local Eateries: Small ramen shops with old ticket machines.

• Rural Areas: Local buses and small shops in the countryside.

• Gachapon & Arcades: These little capsules still love coins!

現金が底をついたら、銀行を探すのではなくセブンイレブンを探してください。

• 理由: 「セブン銀行」のATMは、コンビニのセブンイレブンならどこにでもあり、24時間営業でほぼ全ての海外カードが使えます。

• 郵便局（ゆうちょ銀行）も頼りになりますが営業時間が短めです。
  念のため、常に5,000円〜10,000円は財布に入れておきましょう！

• Why: Their "7-Bank" ATMs are everywhere, open 24/7, and work with almost all international cards.

• Tip: Japan Post Bank (Post offices) is also reliable, but their hours are shorter. Always keep at least 5,000 to 10,000 yen in your wallet just in case!

◆最強の武器はICカード（: The "IC Card" Hybrid）

小銭を持ち歩くのが嫌なら、スマホでモバイルSuicaやPASMOを使いましょう。

• 魔法のワザ: 自販機やコンビニ、さらには一部の小さなお店でも、スマホをタップするだけで支払えます。

• Why: It's considered polite and helps the staff count the money accurately.
  Handing money directly to the person is sometimes avoided for hygiene and politeness.

旅行が終わる頃には、あなたの財布は日本の重たい小銭（特に100円玉！）でパンパンになっているはず。
重くて使えないお土産として国に持ち帰らないで！ 最高の解決策は？
空港のガチャガチャ（カプセルトイ）です！

主要な国際空港（成田、羽田、関空など）には、出発ゲートの直前に、何百台ものガチャガチャが並ぶ巨大なエリアがあります。

• ここが最高: たった300〜500円で、精巧でユニーク、時に面白いミニチュアの日本土産が手に入ります。

Most major international airports (Narita, Haneda, Kansai, etc.) have massive areas filled with hundreds of Gachapon machines right before the departure gates.

• What about 1 yen & 5 yen?: Unfortunately, these tiny coins cannot be used in machines. The smartest and kindest traveler move is to drop them into the donation boxes (UNICEF, etc.) often found in the terminal.
