ゆきちゃんは、雪の季節に生まれた。
父さんは、出生届を出すために
朝、暗いうちに家を出て、山を超えて役場に向かった。
片道五時間ほどかかっただろう。
峠にさしかかる頃には雪が降ってきた。
冷たい風に吹かれながら空をあおいだ父さんは
娘の名前に「雪」の文字を入れる事にしたのだった。
届けを済ませて、母さんの好きな甘いおまんじゅうを買い
我が家に戻った時にはもう日が暮れていた。
あれから数年の月日が流れ
やせっぽちのおチビさんも、元気な小学生になった。
ある朝、ゆきちゃんが目覚めるとあたりは妙に静かだった。
それに家の中の空気が、ひときわ冷たい。
震えながら雨戸を開けたゆきちゃんは、「うわ〜」と叫んだ。
あたり一面の雪景色だ。
かなり積もっている。
( 学校に行くの大変だなぁ ) と思ったけど、でもわくわくする。
母さんが作ってくれた熱々のたんた飯( 注1 )とみそ汁で、体もぽかぽかして来た。
ランドセルを背負って
長靴をはいて、母さんが編んでくれた手袋をする。
古くなったセーターをほどいて編んだ手袋は
不ぞろいで色とりどりの縞模様をしているけど
ゆきちゃんのお気に入りだ。
深い雪の中を、すべったり転んだりしながら山を降りると
近所の子供達が、わいわい騒ぎながら
皆が集まるのを待っていた。
こんな日は、山道よりも林道の方が歩きやすい。
集団になって林道に向かうと
道の脇に積み上げた雪のそばで、真っ赤な焚き火が燃えている。
山仕事のおっちゃん達が集まっていた。
「おっちゃん、あたらせて〜」
子供たちが駆けよった。
「おう、あたってけ」
「学校行くのも、えらいな」(注2)
「ううん、雪合戦できる〜」
「そりで遊べる〜」
「雪だるま作る！」
「ハハ 元気なこっちゃ」
風が吹いて、焚き火の煙がうずをまく。
かじかんだ手を焚き火にかざしながら、子供たちは大はしゃぎだ。
「そろそろ、行けよ」おっちゃんの声に
「行くぞ」と、大きい子が先頭に立って出発した。
道の下では、雪に囲まれた発電所とダムが寒そうだ。
わぁわぁ騒ぎながら林道を行くと
従姉妹のメイちゃんが住む地区にさしかかった。
ここには同級生の美穂ちゃんがいる。
赤いマフラーを巻いた美穂ちゃんも、加わって一段とにぎやかになる。
やがて、一行は学校のある山の登り口に到着した。
ここから雪はまた深くなる。
いたずらっ子のヨシオが、ふざけて大きな木を揺すぶると
どさどさと雪の塊が落ちて来て
女の子たちの悲鳴が上がった。
学校までもう一息。
ゆきちゃんが家を出てから、二時間近くたっていた。
注1 たんた飯 卵かけご飯
この地方の方言ではなく ゆきちゃんの家の呼び方
注2 えらい ここでは、偉いではなく 大変だの意味

Yuki-chan was born during the snowy season.
In the morning, while it was still dark, Father left the house to submit the birth registration, crossing the mountain to head to the town office.
It must have taken about five hours one way.
By the time he reached the mountain pass, it had started to snow.
Looking up at the sky while being blown by the cold wind, Father
decided to include the character for "snow" in his daughter's name.
After finishing the registration and buying the sweet manju buns that Mother liked,
the sun had already set by the time he returned home.
Several years have passed since then,
and the skinny little girl has become a lively elementary school student.
One morning, when Yuki-chan woke up, it was strangely quiet all around.
Moreover, the air inside the house was exceptionally cold.
Shivering as she opened the rain shutters, Yuki-chan shouted, "Wow!"
The entire area was a snowy landscape.
It had piled up quite a bit.
(It's going to be tough to get to school,) she thought, but she was also excited.
With the piping hot rice mixed with millet (Note 1) and miso soup that Mother made for her, her body began to warm up.
She put on her school backpack,
pulled on her rubber boots, and wore the mittens that Mother had knitted for her.
The mittens, knitted by unraveling an old sweater,
had uneven, colorful stripes,
but they were Yuki-chan's favorite.
As she went down the mountain, slipping and falling in the deep snow,
the neighborhood children were making a lot of noise
while waiting for everyone to gather.
On days like this, the forest road is easier to walk on than the mountain path.
When they headed to the forest road as a group,
a bright red bonfire was burning near the snow piled up on the side of the road.
The men who worked on the mountain were gathered there.
"Hey mister, let us warm up!"
The children ran over.
"Sure, go ahead and warm up."
"It's tough going to school, isn't it?" (Note 2)
"No way, we can have a snowball fight!"
"We can play on our sleds!"
"We're going to build a snowman!"
"Haha, you kids are full of energy."
The wind blew, and the smoke from the bonfire swirled around.
Holding their frozen hands over the fire, the children were in high spirits.
"Time to get going," the man said, and
"Let's go!" the oldest child said, taking the lead as they set off.
Below the road, the power plant and dam, surrounded by snow, looked cold.
As they walked along the forest road, making a ruckus,
they reached the area where their cousin Mei lived.
Their classmate Miho lives here.
Miho, wearing a red scarf, joined them, making the group even livelier.
Before long, the group arrived at the foot of the mountain where the school was located.
From here on, the snow gets even deeper.
Yoshio, the prankster, playfully shook a large tree,
and a huge clump of snow came crashing down,
causing the girls to scream.
Almost at school now.
It had been nearly two hours since Yuki left home.
Note 1: Tanta-meshi - Rice with raw egg. This is not a local dialect, but what they call it in Yuki's house.
Note 2: Erai - Here, it means "tough" or "hard," not "great."
