What Is Doyo no Ushi no Hi?
Doyo no Ushi no Hi is the Day of the Ox that falls during the seasonal period called Doyo, which marks the transition between seasons.
In Japan, it usually refers to the summer Doyo period, when people traditionally eat grilled eel (unagi) to help stay energized during the hot summer months.
Why Do Japanese People Eat Eel?
To Beat Summer Fatigue
Eel is packed with nutrients, and it has been considered an ideal summer food since the Manyoshu, Japan's oldest poetry anthology dating back to the 8th century.
How the Tradition Became Popular
According to a well-known story, during the Edo period, the scholar Hiraga Gennai suggested that an eel shop display a sign reading, "Today is Doyo no Ushi no Hi." The promotion was a huge success, and the custom eventually spread throughout Japan.
