Our Facial 3D Scanning System -phost Now Supports Simple 4D (Volumetric) Capture
Our facial 3D scanning system, phost, is now compatible with simple 4D capture.
While it does not reach the ultra-high precision of our standard photogrammetry workflow, it is highly practical for uses such as reference capture and base meshes for modeling.
It offers a flexible option when you need motion-based 3D data quickly and efficiently.
4D Samples
The following samples are shown using an unlit shader, with no influence from 3D lighting or shading.
Left: Vertex color shader
Right: Image texture
With a relatively high polygon count, vertex color rendering can still achieve solid visual quality.
This is especially useful for vertex-color-based effects in Houdini and other workflows where using image textures is not ideal.
Blender Eevee Render Sample
This sample uses the Diffuse Map directly as a Bump texture, with a small amount of added surface detail.
Even with only a subtle enhancement in material definition, the result already looks usable for mid-range shots and similar applications.
Left: Diffuse Map + Bump Map
Center: Vertex color
Right: Vertex color (Unlit)
You can choose the format that best fits your project and workflow.
4D Data Delivery Formats
FPS
Capture is recorded at 60 fps.
When generating the final 4D data, you can choose either 60p or 30p.
Conversion to 24p is also possible, but due to the reduced frame count, the motion may appear slightly choppy.
Audio
Audio can be recorded at the same time using either the camera’s built-in microphone or an external recorder.
Mesh
Sequential OBJ
Alembic format
(Vertex color data is included.)
If you plan to use it, please extract it from the relevant attributes in your software.
Texture
Image sequences: TIFF / JPEG (2K-4K)
Video formats: MOV / MP4, etc.
Notes
Image quality may drop when capturing fast movements that generate strong motion blur.
For the best results, we recommend recording slow and controlled motion.
We are also currently testing conversion to a 4D Gaussian Splatting workflow.
Once we have results that are ready to share, we will post an update.
