【英訳】侏儒の言葉44：貝原益軒
本稿は芥川龍之介『侏儒の言葉』を英訳してみようという、連続企画です。もともと日本文学の作品を英語やドイツ語などの外国語で読みなおすのが好きだったのですが、芥川龍之介でいちばんお気に入りのこの作品には翻訳が見当たらなかったのがこの企画を思い立ったきっかけです。

Ekiken KAIBARA
I, just like others, learnt about an episode of Ekiken Kaibara’s as a primary school pupil. Ekiken once rode a ferryboat with a student, who seemed to be proud of his own intelligence, and discussed arts and sciences of all ages in a fluent manner. Ekiken, though, just listened to him quietly without adding a word. After a while, the boat stopped at the coast. It was customary for travellers on board to give their names to each other in bidding a farewell. It was not until then that he knew Ekiken, and feeling deeply humiliated, he apologised to this great Confucian scholar of the time for his rudeness a moment before. ― This is how the story goes that I learnt.
I discovered the virtue of humility in this episode at that time, or it is true, at least, that I made some effort to find it. However, unfortunately, I am unable to find any lessons in it at all now. I am still somewhat interested in this story barely because I think in the ways as follows:
How extremely harsh the contempt of Ekiken’s was, who remained without so much as a word of his own from beginning to end!
How extremely vulgar the applause of those fellow travellers’, who were delighted to see the student ashamed!
How animatedly the spirit of the new era that Ekiken didn’t know pulsated even in the young student’s rantings!
貝原益軒
わたしはやはり小学時代に貝原益軒の逸事を学んだ。益軒はかつて乗合船の中に一人の書生といっしょになった。書生は才力に誇っていたと見え、滔々と古今の学芸を論じた。が、益軒は一言も加えず、静かに傾聴するばかりだった。そのうちに船は岸に泊した。船中の客は別れるのに望んで姓名を告げるのを例としていた。書生は始めて益軒を知り、この一代の大儒の前に忸怩として先刻の無礼を謝した。― こういう逸事を学んだのである。
当時のわたしはこの逸事の中に謙譲の美徳を発見した。少なくとも発見するために努力したことは事実である。しかし今は不幸にも寸毫の教訓さえ発見できない。この逸事の今のわたしにも多少の興味を与えるはわずかに下のように考えるからである。―
一 無言に終始した益軒の侮蔑はいかに辛辣をきわめていたか！
二 書生の恥じるのをよろこんだ同船の客の喝采はいかに俗悪をきわめていたか！
三 益軒の知らぬ新時代の精神は年少の書生の放論の中にもいかに溌溂と鼓動していたか！
