それどころか、親しみを込めて話しかけてきます。
それもそのはず。
クマの奥さんは、つい数年前まで人間だったからです。
もちろんその頃から、ちょっと大きめではありましたが――。
姿を変えた日
未来に進んだからといって、戦争がなくなったわけではありません。
この村にも時おり、銃声が響いたり、爆弾が落ちてきたりします。
ある日、怯えた兵士が銃を乱射しました。
当てるつもりはなかったのでしょう。
ただ、恐怖心にかられて――
けれど、その弾はおじいさんに当たってしまいました。
どくどくと血が流れます。
止まりません。
銃声を聞きつけた奥さんは、すぐに駆けつけました。
おじいさんのそばに膝をつき、手で傷口を押さえます。
けれど、血はとまらない。
奥さんは、空に向かって叫びました。
「どうか、どうか、夫を助けてください。
私の命に代えてもかまいません……どうか……！」
その願いに、神様は何も答えませんでした。
ただ一筋の強い光が、老夫婦のもとへと降り注ぎます。
光に包まれたおじいさんの血が、すっと止まり、
その胸に、再び息が戻りました。
やがて光が消えかけたとき――
奥さんは、クマの姿へと変わっていたのです。
「お前の夫を想う気持ち、確かに受け取った。
その代わり、人間としての姿は、神がもらっていくことにしよう」
神様はそう言い残して、姿を消しました。
おじいさんは、目の前のクマを見て、すぐに気づきました。
「ありがとう……ありがとう。
でも、私のせいでお前が……」
奥さんは何も言わず、ただおじいさんに寄り添いました。
ふたりは、静かに抱き合っておりました。
それから数年後
春の気配が残る朝、
クマの奥さんは、畑に小さな芽を見つけました。
「あら、この子は去年こぼれた種かしら。しっかり根を張ってるわね」
おじいさんも、耕運機の調子を見ていました。
最近は、奥さんの力仕事に助けられて、腰の痛みも和らいできたようです。
近くを通りかかった村の子どもたちが、声をかけます。
「クマおばさん、おはよー！」
「おはよう。今日は学校かしら？ 気をつけてね」
村の誰もが知っている、あたたかな日常。
クマの奥さんは、もはや「日常そのもの」になっていました。
