Chapter 1: Karakichi, Morning Preparations
In the misty morning town, the sound of a wooden signboard clattering echoed.
“Today too, Sushi Restaurant Karamichi is open!”
Karakichi, the crow, hung the signboard with his beak and spread his wings.
It was still before sunrise. This small sushi restaurant might be the earliest riser in town.
“Good morning, Master!”
A deep voice echoed from behind the curtain.
“Hey, Karakichi. You're full of energy today.”
There stood Master Karamichi, wearing a white headband and a well-worn apron. His black, glossy feathers and shiny beak gleamed in the morning light.
With forty years of experience, he was the town's finest sushi chef.

“Listen, Karakichi, sushi is made with your hands, but it's crafted with your heart.”
“Yes!”
At that moment, there was a knock at the door. It was Ginjirō the seagull, delivering fish.
“Hey, ‘Hashibuto tuna,’ the top-quality stuff is here. It's well-packed.”
“Thank you so much!”
Karakichi's eyes sparkled.

のれんの奥から、どっしりとした声が返ってきます。
「おう、カラキチ。気合いが入っとるな」
そこにいたのは、大将のカラミチ。
白いはちまき、年季の入った前かけ。黒くつややかな羽根に、ぎらりと光るくちばし。
この道四十年、町でいちばんのすし職人です。
「今日は、シャリをにぎってみろ。おまえの手、もう見込みがある」
「ほんとですか⁉ やったあ！」
カラキチは羽ばたきたい気持ちをおさえて、炊きたてのシャリを見つめます。
「いいかカラキチ、すしはな。手でにぎるが、心でつくるもんじゃ」
「はいっ！」
そのとき、戸の外でトントンと音がしました。
魚をとどけにきたのは、カモメのギンジロウさんです。
「へい、“ハシブトまぐろ”、上モノが入ったぜ。ようくしめてある」
「ありがとうございますっ！」
カラキチの目がキラリと光ります。

空はすこしずつ明るくなり、町の羽音がひろがっていきました。
