英語学習:Collocationを理解・使用して英語力をワンランクアップしよう！

英語にはCollosationと呼ばれる"決まり文句"と言える表現があります。個人的には決まり文句と文法の中間として捉えていています。単純な決まり文句という位置づけではなく、こう表現すべきという感じでより文法としての位置づけが強いと考えています。以前はCollocationだけで1冊の参考書が出てました(今もあるかな?)

通常の会話に限らずビジネスシーンにおいてもCollosationはとても重要なポイントとなり是非理解しておきたい表現です。今回は大きく分けて3つのカテゴリで紹介します。この3種類が最もCollocationにおける重要なポイントになると考えています。各々12個づつサンプルを用意してみました。ベースはBritish Englishになっています。

I. ADVERB + VERB

1. Closely Monitor

   • 注意深く観察する

   • We closely monitor market trends.

2. Deeply Regret

   • 深く後悔する、心からお詫びする

   • We deeply regret the inconvenience caused.

3. Firmly Believe

   • 確信する

   • I firmly believe this is the right decision.

4. Fully Understand

   • 完全に理解する

   • I fully understand your concerns.

5. Greatly Appreciate

   • 大変感謝する（非常に丁寧な表現）

   • We greatly appreciate your prompt response to this matter.

6. Highly Recommend

   • 強くお勧めする

   • That new Japanese restaurant comes highly recommended.
     #日本語では"強く"ですが英語では"高く"とい表現になります。

7. Openly Discuss

   • 率直に話し合う

   • Let's openly discuss the issue.

8. Readily Admit

   • 素直に認める

   • The manager readily admitted that a mistake had been made.

9. Seriously Consider

   • 真剣に検討する

   • Have you seriously considered relocating to Edinburgh?

10. Sincerely Apologise

    • 心からお詫びする

    • We sincerely apologise for the delay.

11. Strongly Agree

    • 強く同意する

    • I strongly agree with your proposal.

12. Warmly Welcome

    • 心から歓迎する

    • The client was warmly welcomed by our reception staff.

II.ADVERB + ADJECTIVE

1. Absolutely Essential

   • 絶対に不可欠

   • Good communication is absolutely essential.

2. Completely Satisfied

   • 完全に満足

   • We are completely satisfied with the service.

3. Deeply Concerned

   • 深く懸念

   • The board is deeply concerned about the recent drop in sales.

4. Deeply Disappointed

   • 非常に失望

   • Customers were deeply disappointed.

5. Entirely Possible

   • 十分に可能

   • It is entirely possible to finish today.

6. Fully Aware

   • 十分に認識

   • She is fully aware of the risks.

7. Highly Successful

   • 非常に成功

   • The charity gala was highly successful and raised thousands of pounds.

8. Highly Unlikely

   • 可能性が非常に低い

   • A delay is highly unlikely.

9. Particularly Important

   • 特に重要

   • Accuracy is particularly important.

10. Perfectly Clear

    • 完全に明確

    • Your instructions are perfectly clear.

11. Utterly Ridiculous

    • 全くばかげている

    • Paying fifteen pounds for a sandwich is utterly ridiculous.

12. Widely Available

    • 広く入手可能

    • Electric vehicle charging points are now widely available across the UK.

III. ADJECTIVE + NOUN

1. A Narrow Escape

   • 間一髪で危険や失敗を免れること(色々な場面で使用可)

   • We had a narrow escape when the tree fell right next to our car.

2. Constructive Criticism

   • 建設的な批評

   • I welcome constructive criticism on my draft proposal.

3. Excellent Opportunity

   • 素晴らしい機会

   • This is an excellent opportunity.

4. Growing Demand

   • 増加する需要

   • There is growing demand for electric cars.

5. Heavy Traffic

   • 交通渋滞

   • There was heavy traffic this morning.

6. Immediate Action

   • 速やかな対応

   • Immediate action is required.

7. Key Issue

   • 重要な問題

   • Cost is a key issue.

8. Long-Term Strategy

   • 長期戦略

   • We need a long-term strategy.

9. Practical Solution

   • 現実的な解決策

   • We need a practical solution.

10. Significant Improvement

    • 著しい改善

    • We've seen significant improvement.

11. Unforeseen Circumstances

    • 予期せぬ事が起きる、状況になるなど

    • Due to unforeseen circumstances, today's train has been cancelled.
      #公式なアナウンスなどで使用されます。

12. Valuable Experience

    • 貴重な経験

    • The internship was valuable experience.
