The Otherkin Community
ever awakening to ourselves

This community is now closed. I have changed settings so no one can join and removed posting access for all members (except myself and the other mod of_salfarro). I did not remove any existing members (except for about 12-15 deleted journals), so you can still go back and view locked posts if you wish. I also did not disable comments because that also has the effect of hiding all past comments, which I don't want.

If you're landing here through an interest search or some other pathway, please see the otherkin or otherkin_haven communities on Dreamwidth.

I posted two months ago asking what everyone's opinions were on the idea of closing this comnmunity in favor of either the existing otherkin community on Dreamwidth (which is not directly connected to this one and is nominally owned by someone else, although I don't know how active they are) or opening up the just-in-case archive I made for active posting.

I received a total of *fanfare* one reply, which materially agreed with me in preferring to close this community to new members and new posts and attempt to direct traffic Over There. So in light of that and the fact that there have not been new posts from anyone but me announcing the ongoing SF Bay meetups for more than a year and a half, that's what I'm inclined to do.

If you object to this course of action, this is your last chance to tell me!

(It's possible, though I find it unlikely, that there has been commenting action going on somewhere on past posts that I haven't seen, because the ability to get notifications for any comments on any entries is a Plus/Paid feature and I only have a Basic account. If that's the case, do let me know.)

You are all probably aware by now that lots of Livejournal users and communities felt the new Russian terms of service were a final straw and decided to leave Livejournal for good, whether that also include moving over to Dreamwidth or not. My personal feeling is that I would love to follow suit, but I didn't want to make such a decision unilaterally without asking for input from the community members, and certainly I won't delete my own account while I am still a community owner (orphaning it that way would be a Bad Thing).

On DW there is already a parallel community of the same name, [community profile] otherkin. I don't own that community (it belongs to elven_ranger), so I was unable to back up this community's content to it, and created [community profile] otherkinarchive for that purpose. As you may have guessed from the name, my intent was mostly for archival just in case of some kind of LJ disaster; it's closed membership and commenting turned off, but it could be converted to an active community (and renamed to reflect that) if people wanted. Or we could just migrate to the existing [community profile] otherkin and leave the archive as-is.

There is also [community profile] otherkin_haven, which I do own and which is set up as a members-locked community. (I didn't create it; the person who created both otherkin and otherkin_haven deleted their DW account a while back, and myself and elven_ranger woke up one day to find ourselves randomly delegated community owners.)

TL;DR: Thoughts about closing this community and moving to Dreamwidth?

The SF Bay Otherkin Meetup has been sending out our monthly event announcements through Meetup.com since September 2011. We will be moving to a privately hosted list after the September 10 meetup (to take place in San Jose, CA).

If you are interested in receiving these announcements, please sign up with your email address (no new account creation or "join with Facebook" nonsense required) at http://eristic.net/mailman/listinfo/sfbayotherkin_eristic.net. The meetup general info page is at http://eristic.net/fey/sfbaykinmeetup.php. If you let me know your email address, I can also send you an invitation.

I will continue to also post notifications on the group calendars on WestKin (https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/westkin/info) and Nor_Cal_Otherkin (https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/nor_cal_otherkin/info).

The main driver for this is that Meetup.com costs a minimum of $12 a month, more if paid month-to-month. For a large group with dozens attending every month that would be fine, but for a small group like ours I think that the same function can be gained mainly through regular email.

The November meetup in San Francisco has been cancelled due to a lack of RSVPs. Our next event will be on December 13th at a location yet to be decided in the southeast bay (quite likely Suju's in Fremont).

In an effort to help the otherkin community better understand itself, and to help the public understand the otherkin community, Kinmunity is introducing a 2016 otherkin community survey. The purpose of this survey is to learn more about the community, identify trends and correlations in the community, and to help the community understand itself better. This survey will probably be longer than most others you have encountered; this is because we aim for high quality results. Once the survey closes to responses, the data will be posted publicly with any personally identifiable information removed (although none is really collected in the first place!)

Click here to take the survey!
!DO NOT SHARE THIS LINK! - This survey link contains a unique acquisition code that says you've come from LiveJournal, if someone accesses it from outside LiveJournal their responses will be automatically discarded. If you wish to share a link with friends, share this one: https://kinmunity.com/surveys/index.php/431586?lang=en

Otherkin Community is back up and running. (I'm not sure if you need to be a member to see the post in the News subforum that that link goes to, but you all probably get the idea regardless.)

Does anyone know what's up with Otherkin Community, or how to contact whoever is webmastering there these days (not sure if it's Clodaus or who)? I'm seeing raw PHP code when I go to the site instead of getting the page normally.

ETA July 2: I got a reply from Seraphyna on tumblr on May 27: "I’ve had the same issue. No idea what’s up with it, but I have no access to fix it (not that I could if I did). I tried emailing Clodaus, but the OKC email is down so I left him a message on his Google+ but he either hasn’t seen it or isn’t doing anything about it."

we may have lost it for good if no one can get in touch with Clodaus :-/

ETA August 11: It's back. (not sure if you need to be a member to see posts in the News subforum, but you probably get the idea regardless.)

Question: Do you believe in the existence of Demons and their 'kin'? Why or why not? What would they look like in your opinion? I am just curious about what everyone thinks.

Sincerely,

(Doing more rounds with advertising this thing, apologies if you've seen this before…)

I made my own public chat room (IRC channel), out of my dissatisfaction with many of the others out there, especially those oriented towards mythic types, such as elves, fae, dragons, etc.

It’s called EDMC (Experimental Disposable Mythic Channel). As the name implies, it’s something I’m experimenting with. :)

Details on the chat are on the link below, including a link where you can chat instantly if you don't know how to use IRC:

The meetup for October will be Sunday, October 12, in Menlo Park, CA. The event page is here, but I've recently changed the group settings to be a little more private, so you won't be able to see full information unless you are actually a member of the Meetup group. You can also PM me or email me at arethinn(at)eristic.net for more details.

As the subject line says, just some food for thought... a quote from a post from someone I follow on Tumblr.
What is the relationship between otherkin and roleplaying? Are otherkin just roleplayers?

As an otherkin I'm obviously going to ultimately say 'No'. However, this post will explore the finer details of the connection made between otherkin and roleplaying, in an effort to try and fully explain why otherkin are not all just a bunch of full-time roleplayers.

My brief comment: Of course I agree otherkin (generally) are not "just" roleplaying as elves, dragons, or whatever, despite what outsiders might often accuse us of "obviously" doing. However, I do think there can be value in roleplay as a tool for exploring e.g. a specific past/other life, or what values and/or actions you think express your "other" nature or mind, especially if you're new on the scene (so to speak).
