Outsider art has been a subject of increasing study in recent years, and there have long been afficianados of outsider music, but the area of outsider literature seems to be less appreciated. This community is for those with an interest in it.

What to post? Preferably examples or links to examples, but discussions of favorite authors are welcome.

What qualifies? So-called "insane" authors like Henry Darger or Adolf Wolfli, and truly insane writers such as racists or religious bigots. Religious fundamentalists like Tony Alamo, yes, but not John Hagee or Dennis Prager. Ann Coulter is too mainstream at the moment, but Mumia Abu-Jamal is on death row. Robert Anton Wilson and Antonin Artaud may or may not be considered outsiders, depending on who you talk to. `Net nuts like Wayne Manzo, or those incomprehensible discussion board posters (not your drunk friends). Cult writings. Fringe and pseudo science. Writing by computers or chance or alleged paranormal sources. The latest mispelled e-mail rant your weird aunt just wrote you? Yes, please!

If you're unsure about something, use your best judgement. This community is meant to be inclusive, and new areas to explore are always welcome.

Images may be posted, but either text should be involved, or they should be pictures of or by an outsider author. Outsider art that contains text, for instance, is perfectly acceptable. Graffiti applies, as long as it is text based (legibility is preferred, but not necessary). Weird flyers and found letters can be posted too. Spam texts are okay, but only if all links and images are removed - they may not advertise, hotlink, or in any way put readers at risk of adware or spyware or information collection. Such spam will be deleted and the poster may be banned.

Loose posting guidelines: Outsider texts should generally be posted before an lj-cut, and an explanation or description should be posted after the lj-cut. Be sure to include an explanation if one isn't immediately obvious. If the text is exceptionally long (yes, this is subjective) then put most of it behind the lj-cut. Images wider than 800 pixels should be behind an lj-cut and the explanation before. You are not expected to edit profanity, but if there's a lot of it, put it behind the lj-cut.

This is not a place for you to post your own writing or poetry, unless you are clearly an outsider as described above. And if you have the self-awareness to claim you're an outsider, you probably aren't. There are exceptions - for instance, if Julius Mogyorossy wanted to join and post his thoughts, he'd be welcome.

If it was really him.

"Motto. Go get gabbage gobbets. (Ggabis-Ggope ggaufen gefalligst)"
- Adolph Wolfli
