ABD
One month ago, I passed my candidacy exam. I am now all-but-dissertation. I'm looking at a 2013 timeframe for graduation, preferably earlier in the year than later.

How are you doing in your studies?

Introduce yourselves, physics geeks!
We should revive this community! The last post was by me regarding a website I don't even maintain anymore. Pathetic. I think we should all introduce ourselves. Maybe the activity will attract new members.

Name: Laura
Location: Orlando, Florida
Year: 4th year / first semester doctoral student (I switched programs)
Field: Planetary Science
Research: Lunar dust dynamics (I play with marbles and sand).
Post-graduation career plans: Get a rockin' space-related job (not a postdoc), become an astronaut, take over NASA
What attracted you to physics: I've always been fascinated by the Universe. I was very young when I knew that I wanted to explore the stars. I took my first physics class in high school and loved it. I want to understand how our world works.

Feel free to add any other information you want to share. Maybe everyone who responds can add and answer a new question.

Current Mood: creative

New Website for Physics Students
Hello!

I'm a first year graduate student in astrophysics. I recently created a website aimed at physics students who are interested in pursuing graduate studies and careers in physics. My hope is that this website will assist physics students in pursuing their desired educational and career paths.

Within the website is a guide on how to apply to graduate school, the largest list of physics internships, scholarships, fellowships, and summer research opportunities out there (as far as I'm aware), interviews with current female physics graduate students and female physicists working in their careers, and more.

The website is only a little over a week old, so it's still very small. I need help figuring what I should add, change, expand, and improve. Is my graduate school guide clear and accurate? What would best help physics students learn about opportunities available to them? How can my little website best benefit you? Do you have any experiences you'd like to share?

The link is: Astromiror

Thank you all so much!
Laura

How does one get into grad school ten years after college?
Ok, not quite ten years, but it might as well be.

Questions:

Schools I've looked at want lots of recommendations. If you did research under supervision of a grad student under a prof, can you get recs from both of them?

Should I look at entering a Master's program first? And then transfer after a year?

My grades weren't that hot --- if I take refresher classes, how much do you think that would help?

I'm no grad student and this is probably a stupid question but, can gravity redshift or behave similarly to light as an observer approaches c?

Best Jackson Preparation?
Hey all,

It seems like most people either love or hate using Jackson, but they all agree on the difficulty of getting through it. I was wondering what tips you guys/ladies might have for getting through it with as little pain as possible.

Thanks

Hopefully this community will get lots of members. I'm going through the application process right now for grad schools. All my stuff is done and I'm just waiting on the last letter of recommendation to come in. I know it would have been helpful to have a community like this when I was going through that. Anyways...I just wanted to say hi.

I'm want to specialize in black hole physics, if your wondering.

Germany?
Was konnen mann sagen über Diplom Physik Universitäten in Deutschland? Vielen Dank! (I hope that says: What can you say about physics school universities in Germany?) I suppose it would be pre-Diplom (vor-Diplom?).

Welcome to physics_grad!
I'm not sure what ought to be under the charter here, but I imagine things like:

* how to get into grad school
* what grad school
* current topics of research
* physics GRE prep & advanced physics problems?
* grad school gripes
* your goofy grad school experiences & gripes

Opinions?
