Pink Floyd in 1968
Pink Floyd were an English rock band formed in London in 1965 that remained active until the end of their final tour in 1994. In their early years, they amassed a following for their experimental music, often described as pioneering space rock and psychedelic music. Over time their musical style would drift into progressive rock, a change that would lead them into their most successful era during the 1970's with albums such as The Dark Side of the Moon (1973).
The band was founded by original lead singer and guitarist Syd Barrett, bassist Roger Waters, keyboardist Richard Wright, and drummer Nick Mason. They were later joined by David Gilmour, who would go on to effectively 'replace' Barrett's position as guitarist.
Under Barrett's lead, the band released three singles and one album throughout 1967. The success of the singles "Arnold Layne" and "See Emily Play" cemented Pink Floyd's reputation for their psychedelic sound, and was followed by the full length studio album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn in August of that year. The band's final single with Barrett, and his overall final songwriting contribution to the band's released discography, was "Apples and Oranges" in November, which failed to chart.
