Project Overview
Location: Southern Peru, area around the village of Maca in Caylloma Province
Status: Complete
Project Partners: INGEMMET (Peru); Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD, France), Geoscientists without Borders® (GWB)
Focus Area: Landslide Preparedness
Overview
The goal of this project was to install a permanent monitoring and early warning system to track the evolution of Maca landslide (located in a high seismicity region of Arequipa region of Peru). This landslide threatens the safety of 900 inhabitants, a very popular and frequent road [50,000 vehicles/year (2015-16)] and pre-Inca terraces.
This Landslide Monitoring Project in Peru (LaMoPe) project aimed to develop an effective early-warning system at the village scale, combining seismic, GNSS and rainfall monitoring networks, and integrate the system in the local hazard-management structure.
Approach
The team built three instrumental stations, casitas (small huts), in the landslide area; installed equipment (GPS, seismic sensors); transferred real-time data set up; and knowledge transferred via training of local engineers and local community with educational activities in the village.
Impact
The three instrumental huts were available to shelter the instruments (secured from external vandalism and environmental conditions)
The three seismic plus GPS stations are in operation, continuous mode
Data is transferred on a real-time continuous basis and distributed to all the stakeholders of the project
INGEMMET engineers can collect the data and maintain the instruments on their own
Educational actions in the village and training actions to local engineers achieved
These outcomes strengthen the capacity for local monitoring and early‐warning of landslide hazards around Maca, Peru.
Next Steps
The next step consisted of integrating the monitoring and early warning system into the Maca municipality risk-management structure and developing a community awareness programme for landslide preparedness.
