Landslide Monitoring Project in Peru (LaMoPe)

Using Geophysics to Develop an Effective Early-warning System in a Landslide Area

Status: Complete

The goal of this project was to install a permanent monitoring and early warning system to track the evolution of Maca landslide (located in a high seismicity region of Arequipa region of Peru). This landslide threatens the safety of 900 inhabitants, a very popular and frequent road [50,000 vehicles/year (2015-16)] and pre-Inca terraces.

This Landslide Monitoring Project in Peru (LaMoPe) project aimed to develop an effective early-warning system at the village scale, combining seismic, GNSS and rainfall monitoring networks, and integrate the system in the local hazard-management structure.

The team built three instrumental stations, casitas (small huts), in the landslide area; installed equipment (GPS, seismic sensors); transferred real-time data set up; and knowledge transferred via training of local engineers and local community with educational activities in the village.

Next Steps

The next step consisted of integrating the monitoring and early warning system into the Maca municipality risk-management structure and developing a community awareness programme for landslide preparedness.
