4:16 am - I'm a grandpa!!
|

|
I'm a grandpa, have been now for a whole week! Joshua David was born 24 July at 9.47pm (9 pounds 12 1/2 oz- a big boy!).

He and Bek (my daughter, his Mum) are staying with me out at "Djapana" at the moment, which is wonderful for me! As I'm a night owl and Bek isn't, I'm doing the 'nightshift' with feeds etc, he's a very good baby, so it's usually fairly easy to work out what he needs, and he doesn't complain unless there is something he needs (food, wet nappy, wind). Of course I might be biased but I think he's adorable.
If anyone knows of any good places online to get patterns or other sewing guides for baby clothes and equipment/toys, I'd love the URLs? Pop Simon

Though this community seems to be barely functioning(sadly), I'll have my go at it :3
A little bit of an introduction,
I live in Seattle, I did attend the AIS for fashion design for 1 year. There are several reasons why I left. Between then and now I've made 2 costumes, and am now working on a third.
Current project-
I designed a simple babytop tunic/dress with puff sleeves with bias trimmed placket/vent and bias made ties for closure. It has a "kimono" bodice where one piece goes over the other, I'm trying to decide if I want darts or gathers. It's empire waisted, which gives free flow to an a-line cut which should end about mid thigh. The fabric is a cheap satin and will probably have to be lined in the bodice, and maybe a second layer of lining around the body of the garment. The back will be a 3 button closure, but not with a button placket, just hoops/loops for buttons. Also to go with this, a pair of light pink bloomers trimmed with "confetti" ribbon purchased to match the fabric.
Accessories will include a polar fleece anti pill backpack, with functioning inner pouch and a green lizard like stuffed animal.
My goal is to look like a character from a manga(japanese b&w comic book) called Mikako from Gokinjo Monogatari by Ai Yazawa. My other goal, is to challenge myself to work with satin, bias, and draping.
I've decided to skip out on flat pattern drafting as I do not like it, and since I did my block a year or so ago I have changed in size and am not interested in remaking a new block. I've decided to drape on my dressform and see how that goes. It's been a while since i've draped, so we'll see how that goes.

This is your standard newbie post. I recently fell into sewing in a big way, and now find myself addicted and craving fellow sewing fanatics for support, opinions, and guidance. So when I read the descrip for this commm. it sounded fitting.
Mainly I'm a costumer, Ren Faire and Sci-Fi Fantasy conventions are what I usually sew for. Although recently I've started making my own everyday clothes and I'm liking that more and more.

Hey guys! I'm hosting a panel soon on Beginning Costuming, and a recent computer crash lost my good links. I'm looking for any sites that have good information on beginning sewing or basic costuming. Give me your favorites, please!

11:58 am - Decided to try to finish...
|

I am very excited. I have about 500 sewing projects that are half started and have been lying around for years. I started this tiny lap/baby quilt thing while I was at boarding school. I did blocks in the center and then I decided to put edges around that. I had finished it up until the very last side. Yesterday I finished my cross stitching project. This morning I didn't want to start a new one so I decided I would catch up on some of my sewing. After I get the front of the lap/baby quilt done, I want to work on my pillow. I hope I get most of it done today. I really do need to finish it.

Well I'm new but I do a lot of cross stitchinc, which isnt exactly sewing but then I usually put my cross stitch on pillows...or at least I have been trying to sew them on a pillow. I do most of that sort of stitching by hand. I have made 4 pillows already by hand. But for some reason this one is just seeming to take forever. I really have no motivation for it. Sometimes I do but I am usually about to go to work or am busy with schoolwork. ( Read more...Collapse )

9:25 am - January Sewing-A-Bunch Update
|

Due to unexpected levels of busyness, I've been slow to get started on this. I will post pictures of finished objects as soon as I find time to take them.
Last weekend I:
1. Began a tiered skirt, got halfway through and scrapped it because I didn't like the way the fabric was acting (it was bargain-bin fabric, always a risk).
2. Started and finished a princess-seamed top out of a remnant of embroidered stretch twill, mostly to try out a new pattern and adjust the fit (the shoulders were waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay far apart! WTF?).
3. Started a shoulder bag (lined, with an applique) from scraps and remnants. I'm about 80% finished with this.
4. Cut out a new jacket pattern.
This weekend I hope to:
1. Cut fabric and try out the new jacket pattern.
2. Draft a circle-skirt pattern piece to connect with a yoke from another pattern.
3. Try out circle-skirt-on-yoke idea (and hopefully eat up some of the fabric taking over our apartment).
4. Try the princess-seamed top pattern with a non-stretchy fabric and adjust for fit.
5. Figure out something to do with the 1.5 yards of nice faux fur I have before winter is over.

11:47 pm - Sewing update
|

Since I can't remember what the final verdict was on what to call it...
So far, I've completed one project (a fleece hoodie made from some leftover fabric) and gotten all the machine work done on the second (a skirt for a two-piece formal dress for my degree recital in the spring.) I still need to make the bodice for that, but I'm making a muslin first to make sure the pattern will look ok with it, since it's different than the one that came with it.
