Simfic50 is a low pressure community for prompt writing using the Sims Gaming Platform, based on, and inspired by the fanfic100 concept*. All fiction and machinima posted here remains the copyright of its creators. All rights reserved.
How do I join?
If you would like to participate in the challenge and post your stories here, you will need to join the community, since only community members are allowed to start new posts. All join requests must be approved by a maintainer/moderator - this is just to make sure you are joining because you have an interest in the Sims and Sim Storytelling and not because you're a spam bot.
Once approved, all new members wanting to post stories in this community must comment in this entry and fill out the form posted there**. You will then be assigned a 'tag' which you must place with every entry or update notice you post.
If you just want to keep up with the stories posted here, you can choose to just 'watch this community', but even if you don't have an LJ, everyone is allowed to comment on the story posts.
So how does this work?
Your task is to write 50 Sim Fiction pieces. That means Sim Photo Stories - narrative + pictures. Or if you prefer, you can also create Sim Machinima, or Comic/Manga style stories. These should be based on your original concept, not an interpretation of existing work created by someone else. These can all centre around one family, several different Sims or specifically created Sims for a particular prompt. Its completely up to you do one off stories, or a series, or a bit of both.
If you would really like to write 'Simfanfic' based on the characters created by Maxis with, or without screencaps, feel free to do so as well.
If you are interested in doing a legacy, there are heaps of other communities devoted to them.
How long does my entry need to be?
For written works: a minimum of 200 words and a suggested maximum of 2,000. For Machinima: a minimum of 30 seconds with a suggested maximum of 3 minutes. For Comics: 1-2 pages.
However, these are just a general guide, I'm not too concerned if anyone wants to go over these limits.
Are there deadlines? When do I post? All a once or one at a time?
Nope, you post when you want to, and as you finish them. Although its good to remember that if you post several updates close together, it might take readers time to get to them all.
How do I post stories here?
When posting your Sim Stories or Comics, the entry must be behind an lj cut, and the following form must be attached outside of the cut:
When posting your Sim Movies, you can either post the form, a teaser pic and link to the site hosting the film, or in lieu of the teaser, embed your movie in the post. More information on embedding media on LJ is available here.
Affiliates may post a teaser pic, along with the form and a link to their story updates. Please make sure to note that the link will take people to another site. You can link to any journal site, such as Blogger, Wordpress or DreamWidth, but linking to the S2 or S3 Exchange is not allowed. More information on adding links to other web sites is available here
Teaser pics should be no larger than 450x350, but images under the cut can be any size, however, I do recommend going no larger than 800px in width.
Do I have to do the prompts in order? Can I use any of the prompts in my story?
First off, one prompt, one story. The prompt doesn't necessarily mean you have to use the word - it is more of using the 'idea', 'concept' or 'theme' of the word itself.
You do not need to post the stories in the order of the prompts, the order is up to you (i.e. - you might want to do prompt 21 first because it appeals to you more and then head over to prompt 1).
You may select from one of three available prompt tables. Writers are asked to please only use one table at a time. Once you have started on a table, you must complete all the prompts before you use prompts from another table.
What ratings are allowed? What about warnings?
All ratings are allowed, however I ask that you remember that all stories must be placed behind a cut and include appropriate warnings. I really recommend that writers err on the side of caution and include warning about anything and everything which might offend. I also suggest if you are writing a series, to provide an overall rating rather than individual ratings for each entry. Anything over NC-17 must be placed behind a friends lock by changing the "Show this entry to" option from "everyone (public)" to "members".
Can we post the stories/comics/machinima elsewhere that we write for this?
Yes, they are your stories. However, we do ask that you post your entire stories to this community as well, and not just post it to your journal and then link to it from here. Exception has been made for affiliates, since they do not use LJ for posting their stories.
I've finished all 50 of my prompts, now what?
When you have finished all 50 stories, let me know, and you will receive an award to put in your journal. If you feel like doing more prompts after that, you are more than welcome to start on a new table, use another table you found and liked, create your own table or even reuse ones you have already used.
I've changed my user name! What do I do about my tag?
Just drop a line here with your old username and I will fix your tag right up.
I'm not on LJ but I really want to take part. What do I do?
Just email me and let me know where you were thinking about posting your stories/movies and I can add you to the list of non-LJ Simfic50 participants/affiliates. Any journal site, such as Blogger, Wordpress or DreamWidth is fine, but I will not accept affiliates who only post on the S2 or S3 Exchange.
However, if you do want to post update notifications here, you will have to have an LJ and be a member of this community.
I have a question that isn't here, how can I contact you?
Post your question to this entry and it will be answered as soon as possible.
