The Carolina Hurricanes are a professional ice hockey team that plays in the National Hockey League (NHL). The team's home arena is Lenovo Center, in Raleigh, North Carolina. Formerly known as the Hartford Whalers, the franchise would move from Hartford in 1997 to Greensboro, North Carolina before eventually settling in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1999. They play in the Metropolitan Division of the NHL. The Hurricanes have won the Stanley Cup twice, defeating the Edmonton Oilers in 2006 and the Vegas Golden Knights in 2026.
The name "Hurricanes" was chosen because the eastern part of North Carolina is often hit by hurricanes during tropical storm season.
