Workaround: How to launch the game on Windows 7 and 8
There is an issue in latest versions of Unreal Engine 4 that can crash the game on startup.

The exact reason for this LowLevelFatalError is still unknown yet speculations are it might be related to change in a the way how the engine wraps textures for shaders. Older Shader resource view (SRV) was replaced by newer Unordered Access view (UAV) in recent versions of UE4. You can view more information on the exact difference here[docs.microsoft.com]. The reason why this new method may not work on earlier operating systems is possibly related to the fact that DirectX 11 version Microsoft provided for both Windows 7 and Windows 8 is slightly different from DirectX 11 version in Windows 10 and it doesn't support this method.

Train Life users may also experience this issue as the game was updated to most recent version of Unreal Engine 4 which uses this method.

Luckily, there is one possible workaround for this problem:

https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/releases

DXVK is Vulkan-based DirectX API for Linux but it can also be used on Windows to boost performance of old DX 9 and some DX 11 games. It's the same API that is used by Steam Deck for running of existing Windows games. And apparently, this API can also fix the Train Life problem.

So how exactly do you fix this problem?

1) Download the lastest version of DXVK (currently dxvk-1.10.3.tar.gz) from github
2) Open the archive and find d3d11.dll and dxgi.dll in the archive (use 64bit version)
3) Extract both files into your game folder in Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Train Life - A Railway Simulator\TrainLife\Binaries\Win64
(the path may be different if you have your Steam directory on different drive)
5) Run the game without crash on startup
6) Enjoy the game!

* Keep in mind though that you will need to have GPU which supports Vulkan for this workaround. Namely it means you need to have at least Radeon HD 7000 series or better or Nvidia Geforce 800 series or better.

What GPU/system do you have? Is there any crash error message?

Try DXVK version 1.9.4 if 1.10 doesn't work. Make sure to use 64 version from archive and copy BOTH files d3d11.dll and dxgi.dll to mentioned directory (the path is different if you have steam installation on other drive).
Hey I'm on windows 10 with a NVIDEA GeForce 1060 and I'm getting that crash message every time I start the game. I have verified integrity of game files, updated all of my drivers, updated windows 10, I have even tried doing the above fix and nothing is working.

What do you suggest?
demorabbit this fix is for windows 7 owners, did the game work before on your system as its more native to windows 10 now than it is for older systems like mine and other's ?
low level fatal error ( file unknown) line 1209
gamethread timed out waiting for render thread after 120 secs

This happened after i was in the main menu and game error'ed out.

If this bug goes then game works fine after fix for win 7 64 bit.

Still haven't gotten the game to work at all. Just bought the game and keep getting the lowlevelfatalerror message on startup. Was hoping this might fix it but still nothing yet.
I have a similar, but different issue... I got the mentioned error message, but I copied over those two files suggested, and that then allowed the game to run.

However, on my first attempt, I got as far as the 'Welcome to Europe railway' audio, and the game did a hard crash (no video signal, micro audio loop, etc).

I restarted the computer, and restarted the sim, and this time I got to the main menu. I set up a career, but when I got to the actual game part, my train was present, but there was no ground, other than distant hills. The frame rate was really bad, too.

I restarted again, and this time, lowered the graphics settings. This resulted in me not only getting properly to the game (Entire world rendered, and to my surprise, a very nice frame rate).

I was actually able to complete the first tutorial, and even managed to (one by one) move up what I thought were 'harmless' graphics settings.

But, once I got to the second tutorial, the sim did a soft crash to desktop (no freeze, etc). Same error message (LowLevelFatalError [File Unknown] [Line 258] Direct3DDevice -> CreateUnorderedAccessView(Texture -> GetResource(),&UAVDesc,(ID3D11UnorderedAccessView.... GetInitReference())Failed at ue4271/Engine/Source/Runtime/Windows/D3D11RHI/Private/D3D11UAV.cpp:116 with error E_INVALIDARG

I'm running Win7, with an NVidia1060 and 12gigs of RAM. My CPU is under the recommended, but oddly enough I was getting very smooth frame rates. I intentionally kept view distance to medium/low, figuring that might help the RAM/CPU strain.

Any suggestions? Seems to be running very well, but then suddenly stops at some random point, with that error message.
Is there a particular graphic setting that should be kept low to reduce the chance of a crash due to this issue (error message in my previous post above)? Texture quality?
Update: I seem to get through a full tutorial each time, but when it's loading the next one, I get this error:

LowLevelFatalError [File:Unknown][Line 258]
Result failed at
ue4271/Engine/Source/Runtime/Windows/D3D11RHI/Private/D3D11Query.cpp
:335
with error DXGI_ERROR_INVALID_CALL
Update update: I haven't run into that error message for quite some time now (...many sessions). Seems that is 'fixed' for me.... although I appear to get some (seemingly) resource-based crash from time to time.

Everything is running very smoothly, but then at some random point (where some resource is overloaded?) my monitor goes black, and there is literally no video signal (and the monitor does a 'flashing power light' kind of deal, as if the video cable were pulled.

I figure it's a RAM or VRAM thing... both of which I'm a bit low on. I run CPU CORES (CPU utility that also has a RAM clear feature), which seems to let me do several runs without issue... but eventually, at some point (not always) I hit that threshold.

I've lowered some of the graphics settings (...ones I figured would stress the RAM or VRAM). Again, it runs very smooth and well... but on some sessions I hit that threshold. Wish I knew what it was. The RAM doesn't seem to be getting fully used (...at least while it is running normally). Can't really speak for the VRAM, as I don't seem to have any obvious monitor for that.
I'm still getting the same issue, regardless of settings. Runs beautifully (aside from the headlights not illuminating the ground!), but then at some random point, the screen goes black, and the actual video signal terminates. Audio (from the sim and outside programs) still plays, but there is no actual video signal, and I'm forced to do a hard reboot of the PC.

I'm no expert, but I'm assuming some resource is getting fully filled (...VRAM?). I've tried lowering all the video settings in the sim, but (if anything) it seems to make it worse!

Wish I could get some feedback on what various things might cause the video signal to just terminate (with the audio continuing fine). I can only imagine VRAM or maybe overheating of the GPU (...doubt it, but certainly not impossible). Running a NVidia 1060, although it only has 3gigs of VRAM.
UPDATE: Tried running TrainLife again in July 16 (after a bit of an absence from the game), and now I find (at least in this one session I've done so far) that the game hard crashes immediately after the menu screen (..when the game itself should be starting). So, now it's considerably worse. Video signal literally gone, and the monitor goes black and gives me the No Signal message. I have to hit the power button of the PC to shut down and restart, as I can't control the computer once the video signal gets yanked by the crash.

Have you tried running in windowed mode? Are you using the latests dxvk files? (there is 1.10.2 version now). (also be sure to use x64 version if you have 64-bit system) Did you try deleting Config folder in C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local\TrainLife\Saved ? (you can also look for crash errors there). What Nvidia drivers are you using? Other than that, it would be helpful if you can provide dxdiag.txt file to see if there is anything that can cause this behavior.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/open-and-run-dxdiag-exe-dad7792c-2ad5-f6cd-5a37-bf92228dfd85

I literally just tried running the game after update now on my comp with Win7 64, 8GB RAM and 1050Ti 4GB and it works just normally so I can't see any reason why it shouldn't work on your configuration.

3GB VRAM can be a bit of a problem, that's true, but IIRC the game only used 2.5GB most of the time when I tried benchmarking it with GPU-Z.
Hi. Thanks for all that. Ya, previously, it was running like butter... but then after a random amount of time (minutes), it would suddenly cause the video signal to 'quit', leaving my monitor black, with a 'No Signal' message on it. The sim, and anything else in the background continued to run (...at least audio), and no amount of CTRL+ALT+DEL or ALT+TAB would get me control/video back.

Now, it does that no video thing right after leaving the main menu (game session starting).

I'm using the latest dxvk files (checked yesterday), and am using the x64 version. I don't think I've tried windowed mode (...although it's possible it already is windowed).

I am fairly sure my video drivers are up to date (...pretty sure I've check that a few times for various reasons).

I don't think I've tried deleting the config folder... although maybe I have (as I've tried a bunch of suggested things over the last few months). I can try it again.

It's great to hear that you are able to run it on a system closely matching mine... That's encouraging. I tried running it with CPU Cores running (doing a RAM clear beforehand)... but that seems to have no real effect.

I wanted to monitor the RAM and CPU when it crashes, but since it pulls the video out when it does, it's impossible to view the screen, and you have to kill the power just to reboot.

On thing I think I can try, is to see if I can plug in a second video cable, and hook that into my TV monitor, which may not get the No Video error when it crashes, and I may be able to view the resource monitor.

One other user made an interesting post, claiming that the HDMI cable can be a culprit, as there's some incompatibility or something... Not sure that's the case with my situation, though.
I just did another test, with all the graphics settings on Medium, and the Config folder deleted.

I ran the Resource Monitor, and the RAM and CPU didn't seem to be getting stressed.

One thing I did notice, though, was that every few seconds, the TrainLife exe would show as Not Responding for about 1/2 a second or 1 second.

I was able to play for a while (several minutes), but then it froze.

I was actually able to quickly ALT+TAB out so I could try and view the Resource Monitor.

What I saw, instead, was a Windows error window:

LowLevelFatalError [File:Unknown][Line: 258]
