THE BIG RETROSPACE FAQ - UPDATED!
Hey, Cosmic Janitors!

There are certain questions that come up frequently, so we thought we would clarify things a little with this FAQ topic.
Feel free to write in the topic and ask anything.

❓ Where will the game be released?
💡 Answer: RetroSpace is out on October 1, on PC, Xbox & PS5 — Nintendo Switch 2 pending.

❓ What is the price?
💡 Answer: $19.99 – exact price may vary by region.

❓ Is there a demo for the game?
💡 Answer: Yes, there is a demo which you can try out – note that your demo progress will not transfer over to the full game.

❓Is the game a full release, or Early Access?
💡 Answer: The game is a full release.

❓ Is this game an immersive sim?
💡 Answer: Yes, we are proud to join the ranks of immersive sim games. Of course, this genre definition is pretty loose, but it is important to us that the gameplay is as free as possible, that players can solve problems in multiple ways, and that they can build multiple types of characters for themselves. (And there will be stacking crates too!)

❓ Will there be difficulty levels in the game?
💡 Answer: Yes, there will be 4 different difficulty levels in the game.

❓ Will there be free saving in the game?
💡 Answer: Yes, a save option can be enabled at every difficulty level, but in some cases, this may override the vision the developers had in mind.

❓ How much horror and how much action is there in the game?
💡 Answer: Both are true, although if we had to choose, it's more of an exploration-based survival horror game than a Quake-style boomer shooter. There will be plenty of shooting (if the player wants it), but it's basically an immersive stealth-action FPS, not a “shooter” in the traditional sense.

❓ Will stealth be the only way to succeed?
💡 Answer: No. There will be many ways for the player to succeed in the game. Stealth plays an important role, but it will also be possible to play without paying any attention to it - with the help of tech gadgets, mutations, and, of course, traditional weapons.

❓ Serious or humorous? Both?
💡 Answer: Yes, both. We consider humor important because it is one of the factors that sets RetroSpace apart from many similar games, but it is also important to us that humor never overshadows immersion. The world we created for the game and the main story of the game are very serious, we just serve it up with a large dose of dry/dark humor.

❓ Is this game Metroidvania?
💡 Answer: Not exactly, but partially, yes. The game was inspired by Metroidvania titles, so there will be a huge map, a lot of backtracking, and as the player progresses through the story, they will unlock new areas, shortcuts, and secret paths, like in Metroidvanias.

❓ What were the main inspirations for the game:
💡 Answer: Half-Life, System Shock 2, Thief 1-2, Void Bastards, Deus Ex, Prey 2017, Bioshock 1-2, Metroid Prime, Dark Souls, Silent Hill, Resident Evil 1-2, Blood West, Dead Space series, and many, many more...

❓ Is this game single-player only?
💡 Answer: Yes, we don't have any plans to add co-op mode or any kind of multiplayer to the game at this time. This may change in the future, but currently we are designing RetroSpace as a classic, story-driven, exploration-based action-horror game.

❓Does the game support controllers?
💡 Answer: Yes! As the game will come to consoles too, the game will have a full controller support (even on PC).

❓Does the game support Steam Deck?
💡 Answer: Yes.

❓How long does it take to complete the game?
💡 Answer: A standard playthrough will take around 10-15 hours, while a dedicated player could easily spend two or even three times that amount on the game. Since the game will feature many secrets, collectibles, hidden things and side quests, and of course, achievements as well, and the replayability factor will also be high because of these things.

cool thanks for all the info and i hope you add new game + later down the line
I hope that on the highest difficulty, the respawn system will be quite costly for the player, and even better if it can be disabled. And for a second challenge, permadeath or at least a significant rollback, for example, to the beginning of the chapter, may come in handy.

Thank you! And yes, we have ideas for adding NG+ or even extra game-changer mutators to the game.

Yes, the hardest diff will be really-really punishing. :)
Why won't it be "too casual" even on the easiest diff?

The game will be fairly easy on the easiest difficulity (of course, that's relative) but will still has elements that makes it non-casual. We have little handholding and the game will need some deep concentration at some points. The easy mode won't give you extra quest markers and such, but the combat will be more forgiving.

That seems too easy. On the highest difficulty level, when the player dies steam should completely revoke the game key and make you buy the game all over again, deleting any and all save progress in the process.

Muhaha! :D No, actually on the highest diff, you'll have a certain amount of respawn chance, and then it's game over, you'll need to restart the whole game from the begnining. Of course there will be other restrictions as well, like less currency and ammo and the usual stuff. (we don't want to spoil everything)

Perfect!👍👍👍
You had me at Prey 2017. It's my favourite game of all time for the amount of freedom it gives the player. If you even inspire in that direction then I'm totally in. Give please!
Guys, the demo is OUT NOW! :)))

Thanks
Will there be subtitles for everything? I had a hard time understanding the character at the end.

BTW love the Ripley pin-up :-)
Edit: And the name for the highest difficulty made me chuckle

Yeah, we'll give subtitles for the ingame cutscenes too!
Heya, loved the demo but I'm curious if the corpse run mechanic will be optional in the full game?

I don't really enjoy this mechanic outside of soulslikes, personally.
