ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE

In the hope that Project Aces sees this.
After spending quite a few hours with Ace Combat 8, my overall impression has unfortunately become much more negative than I initially expected.

Visually, the game is fantastic. The improved graphics, lighting, clouds, rain, thunderstorms and weather effects create an amazing atmosphere. I also really appreciate the return of squadron commands, because being able to give orders to your wingmen makes them feel much more useful and involved than they did in Ace Combat 7. I’m also glad that Post-Stall Maneuvers are still part of the game.

However, my biggest problem is the flight handling.

Compared to Ace Combat 7, the aircraft feel significantly heavier and more sluggish. Direction changes are less responsive, and even with maneuverability parts equipped, that heavy feeling never really disappears. At times, it honestly feels like you are trying to fly a truck through the sky.

The High-G Turn is one of the clearest examples. In Ace Combat 7, you could perform High-G Turns much more aggressively and use them repeatedly during intense dogfights. In Ace Combat 8, the delay before you can perform another High-G Turn feels noticeably longer. Even with the appropriate parts installed, the aircraft never reaches the same level of responsiveness that AC7 had.

This already reduces the intensity and dynamism of dogfights, but the problem becomes even more noticeable in multiplayer, where fast reactions, precise positioning and aggressive maneuvering are far more important.

Unfortunately, the multiplayer itself is where my disappointment became much bigger.

What I loved about Ace Combat 7 multiplayer was being able to jump into matches, choose the aircraft and setup I wanted, play with friends and simply enjoy competitive dogfights.

Ace Combat 8 feels completely different.

There is no proper option to create a private lobby and simply play exclusively with friends. Instead, you are forced into a progression system where you have to spend a huge amount of time grinding before you can access the aircraft and equipment you actually want to use.

The progression feels far too restrictive for an arcade combat flight game.

Ace Combat has never been an MMORPG, yet the multiplayer now feels like it has borrowed too many ideas from that kind of progression system. Instead of giving players freedom, it constantly limits them through ranks, unlocks and grinding.

What makes this even more frustrating is that the XP gain appears to be fixed at around 100 XP per match, meaning there is very little you can do to accelerate the process even if you perform extremely well.

For me, this completely misses what made Ace Combat 7 multiplayer enjoyable.

Players who supported Ace Combat 7 for years should not feel like they are being punished by having to grind endlessly just to regain the freedom and aircraft selection they already enjoyed in the previous game.

Ace Combat 8 absolutely improves the series on a technical and visual level. The graphics, atmosphere, weather effects and squadron commands are excellent.

But when it comes to the two things that matter most to me, flight handling and multiplayer freedom, Ace Combat 7 is still clearly superior.

Ace Combat 8 looks better.

Ace Combat 7 flies better.

And in my opinion, Ace Combat 7 understood much better what made Ace Combat multiplayer fun in the first place.

If I had not already invested so many hours into the campaign, I would seriously consider refunding the game.

Who else feels the same way?

I actually love how the handling feels but its because i'm playing with a flightstick + vr. when i tried it with controller it definetly felt a lot worse the "pseudo-simmy" feel doesnt quite work on controller
No I dont feel the same way at all the F-4 in AC7 with no parts also feels sluggish af too. Get some agility parts and it really feels the same?

FYI I have over 300 hours in 7
After all, flight games ought to incorporate some basic physics elements. This is a key reason why PW is so highly acclaimed; in contrast, AC was late to introduce flight physics—and even then, only to a minimal degree—which was quite bizarre. In reality, if yaw and sideslip angles were factored in, using the gun would be far easier (this excludes FPS players who rely on "novice driving" control schemes).

Just imagine, I have a lot of people I used to play Ace Combat 7 with all the time.
@Bandai Namco Aces Inc.

In Ace Combat 7, you could easily learn and fly perfectly. The online options were perfect: special weapons on/off, map settings, and the ability to kick mod users.

In Ace Combat 8, the planes are all like tanks. The mod users have been replaced by a ton of network errors. If they’d left the customizable parts slots from the campaign, you could play even more however you want. The grind is unnecessarily drawn out. Being able to set a longer mission duration would also be a cool option. Right now, all of this is rather poorly implemented. Supposedly, it was supposed to be a huge map with multiple squadrons—but the reality is just lobby nonsense and mini-maps.

Yeah, I honestly have no idea what the developers were thinking. Instead of listening to what the community actually wanted, they simply tried to implement innovative ideas. Never change a system that already works... Apparently, they just didn’t place that much importance on it.
These constant bugs are really annoying. They happen with everything even something as simple as trying to reach the milestones. Then you go into the hangar, and boom, there’s another bug, and the game crashes.

There are problems with practically every little thing. And the loading times for some things are just ridiculous. It feels like billions of things are loading in the background, many of which probably aren’t even needed at that moment.

Another problem is that players with unstable internet connections can cause the entire match to crash, and as soon as the sequence for the next match is over, you get thrown back into the lobby. There are simply far too many things that have been implemented terribly here.
Agreed, the flight handling feels really off when compared to AC7. the jets in AC8 just aren't as responsive and often times feels more like your flying a semi truck in the sky with how heavy and unresponsive it feels.

Wouldn't have minded the new changes if the jets didn't have that weird input delay/lag to it that made flying feel weird even when playing on a gamepad.

Yeah, absolutely. What bothers me most is that pretty much everything you learned and carried over from AC7's multiplayer is now almost completely useless, and you're basically forced to fly around in what feels like a 40-ton semi truck. On top of that, the electronic warfare mechanics mean that even experienced players can get completely torn apart because there is barely anything you can do to counter them. Overall, what they delivered here is honestly downright ridiculous. Really disappointing.
I definitely found it really heavy at the start, felt offputting given I was flying the lovely beautiful legacy hornet. Compared to AC5 which i had been playing prior to release, definitely heavier. Mobility parts and better aircraft helped but the game definitely leans on the High G turn mechanic.

This is the BEST part of this game. Finally an AC game where maneuvering the plane takes at least some skill. AC7 was like flying a camera around.

In fact I wish it were still a bit harder, with more inertia/drag like with a real plane. But it's going in the right direction away from the joke it was since Air Combat. High time they updated the flight model a little.

AC7 has no dogfights because of how trivial controlling the plane is. High-G turn is like "I want to be behind the enemy without any effort now." It's so easy it's boring. The only way AC7 had any even semi-dogfights was basically making the enemies snap-change directions with zero logic or physics. They had to do that because of how easy it was to turn in that game yourself.
i like the heavier feel.
7 was too anime for me.
