Can I get the Shadow Assault record in Mission 28 in Free Mission mode?

Assuming that I've played Mission 18 in Free Mission, and fulfilled the condition by shooting down Shadow 24, then I went to play Mission 28 in Free Mission.

Or do I need to be in the same Campaign playthrough?

It has to be through Campaign, as I found out. Free Mission does not acknowledge your actions in previous missions.
