So shadow play does NOT work with this game?
That sucks... Fraps is garbage when it comes to recording fast games

Worked just fine for me, I use the manual option. Make sure it's enabled in your Nvidia Experience thing, it likes to disable itself whenever it updates... and it has to update every other day or so.
when i push record, it just has a red line over the status indicator and won't record
how do you use shadowplay? i wanted to use it for CS:GO but the game stopped
Shadowplay can be set to auto-record the last 10 minutes or so, and/or Alt+F9 to record manually.

I've gotten the red line over the status indicator once, try to check for updates with the program, I had an update waiting, and that fixed it. Or restart your computer?
also it happens(red line) if you dont have enough free space or harddrive is almost full, so check that you have at last around 10-20gb free space or so
Mmmm glad to hear that ShadowPlay's working for some people with this game, and therefore works in general ... kind of a weird thing to say since unfortunately there's a few games I've tested where shadowplay won't work for me for some reason :(
The game must be full screen in 1920x1080 resolution, could that be the problem?
I was having the same problem, I tried everything I read on other sites like turning off and on ShadoPlay, changing the HDD where it saves the videos, reinstalling drivers, installing previous drivers, etc.
I have a SSD as my main drive and I had like 100GB free there and a second HDD with 600GB free, I just got it to work after moving two files to my second HDD, now I have 150GB free on the SSD and it is working... I didn't do anything else other than that, hope that helps some one.
It works when you switch from windowed back to full screen from the options, then you can record. If you alt-tab you will need to do the switch back and forth again before you record.
Shadowplay works for absolutely every game for me except this one.
All it records is a black screen.
what helped me is this:

i asked ChatGPT (ay ay calm down)

1. his response is to download dgVoodoo2 (https://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2/dgVoodoo2/) (dgVoodoo v. - for regular usage)

There will be folders in the downloaded .zip archive:

MS

3Dfx

dgVoodooCpl.exe

2. What to copy to the game folder

Go to the folder where the game is:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\METAL GEAR RISING REVENGEANCE

Copy from the dgVoodoo2 archive only this file:

MS\x86\D3D9.dll

Insert D3D9.dll right next to the .exe of the game

Don't copy anything else yet.

3. Launch and basic configurations of dgVoodoo

Launch dgVoodooCpl.exe

In the upper-right corner, click Add

Specify the folder with MetalGearRising.exe
(important: select the folder, not the .exe file!)

dgVoodoo will now apply the settings only to this game.

4. The main tab "General"

In the "General" tab, set:

Adapter to use → your NVIDIA
graphics card (not “All of them", but specifically the GPU)

Output API → Direct3D 11 ← this is the main thing

✔ Fast video memory access

✔ Disable Alt-Enter to toggle screen mode

Don't touch the rest.

5. DirectX tab

Go to the "DirectX" tab:

VRAM → 2048 MB or 4096 MB

✔ Bilinear blit stretch

✔ Force vSync → Off

✔ Resolution → Unorced

DON'T turn these on:

MSAA

Anisotropic filtering

HDR

Any “force" effects
(Metal Gear Rising doesn't like that.)

6. Saving

Press Apply, then OK.

7. Settings in the game itself (important)

Start the game after applying the settings in dgVoodoo, not before

In the game:

Fullscreen → On

Resolution — native to the monitor

8. Checking that dgVoodoo really works

When you start the game, a file will appear in the folder:

dgVoodoo.log

Open it (via Notepad or anything else) — there should be:

Output API: Direct3D 11

9. Now ShadowPlay

Alt+Z

Regular game recording (not Desktop)

If everything is done correctly, the image in the video recording won't be pitch black or frozen

Possible problems:

Black screen → delete D3D9.dll, try another version of dgVoodoo

Soap / bluer → disable bilinear stretch

FPS is low → this is OK, it's the price for DX11

If even dgVoodoo2 doesn't work, then:

The NVIDIA driver is too new and fresh

Or ShadowPlay completely abandoned DX9
i am an old man now. your help is late, but appreciated lol. hopefully this helped someone out there
much more easier ways by gemini:

Installing DXVK (Switching to Vulkan):
1. Download the latest version of DXVK (the `dxvk-*.tar.gz` archive from GitHub).
2. Take the `d3d9.dll` file from the `x32` folder and place it in the game’s root folder (next to `MGRR.exe`).
3. What this does: The game starts rendering graphics via the Vulkan API. This completely eliminates the issues with D3D9 device resetting when using Alt+Tab and fixes ShadowPlay capture.

Using MGRR Resolution Fix (Special K / MGR Fix):
1. Install MGR Fix (or the fix from Kaldaien / ThirteenAG).
2. In the config, enable forced *Borderless Windowed Mode* and disable frame rate limiting..
3. What this does: The game stops seizing exclusive access to the monitor, and ShadowPlay stops losing the video stream..

Disabling hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS):
1. Go to Windows Settings -> System -> Display -> Graphics (Graphics Settings).
2. Disable “Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling” (Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling).
3. Restart the PC.
4. What this does: It resolves the conflict between the Windows 10/11 frame buffer and the old DX9 renderer when capturing ShadowPlay.

Forced launch as Administrator:
Right‑click on `MGRR.exe` -> *Properties -> Compatibility -> “Run this program as an administrator”.
Do the same for `NVIDIA Share.exe` (in the `C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\NVIDIA GeForce Experience` folder or the `NVIDIA App` folder)..
What this does: Aligns the access rights of the overlay and the game to the frame buffer.
