Why does the protagonist dive into the water?
It's like the most obvious death sentence.

She isn't a mermaid. She would need special equipment to reach the bottom.

Seriously, if a mermaid were to offer me to show her kingdom - I'd say: "No, thanks". Because you don't have to be a genius to realize that this is a bad idea. You just have to have some common sense.

First, she's a total pushover for hot women. She will do things that are bad ideas just to keep her 'friends' happy.
I think she expected to be under there for maybe a minute. She definitely expected that the mermaid would allow her to come up for air and that she wouldn't be taken too deep into the ocean. From what I understood, the mermaid didn't necessarily say she would show MC the entire kingdom -- just a small sliver of it, like the part of the beach the mermaid visits. So I think it does make some level of sense! After all, people swim in the ocean all the time.

When they do that, it's one of the 3 things:

1) They swim at the surface of the ocean;
2) They use special equipment to be able to swim in the ocean;
3) They are actually trained to be able to swim in the ocean without requiring special equipment ( like the Polynesians );
lol i was thinking that too, but i guess she didnt wanna risk losing the only friend she made? you do stupid things when ur desperate not to be lonely man
because Rosette never had any friends and spent her life being bullied.
Anybody who showed her a modicum of kindness is immediately someone she would do anything to please. Even to her own peril.
