Death + Currency Bleed Doesn't Feel Good
Unlike most other soulslikes I've played, AI Limit chooses to immediately make you lose currency rather than give you a chance to retrieve it, which I think is a design mistake.

If there's a boss that you wall at, there's no rhyme or reason to hold on to currency because you'd lose it all from the deaths. And chances are, the amount of currency the boss drops is not much more than what you lose.

The wise move, therefore, is before going into any new area, you spend as much as you possibly can at the last Branch in case of an unexpected boss, miniboss, or tough gauntlet of trash mobs and traps. And if you have a lot but not enough to buy the next level or item you want, grinding to hit the next threshold becomes mandatory rather than an option, and that lack of choice does not feel good (because you don't want to risk dying and losing currency), so you're constantly backtracking after each new Branch to only fight familiar enemies in familiar areas.

It is only during a grinding session that you ever consider holding currency (to buy w/e thing you're going for), where all you do is repeatedly go through the same farming loop.

There's not really much in this game you have to spend any significant amount on, the only thing requiring a lot of crystals I can think of is late game level ups, and by that point it's just an extra reward for doing well, not really a requirement.

Even if you do need more crystals than you have at the moment, the best thing to do is just sell goods. You can't use them for anything else anyway, and 1 or 2 usually gets you enough for whatever you need.

Dying isn't supposed to feel good, and I think it's rather leniently designed with the game's currency system.

Edit: also yes, don't hoard your crystals.
I really never noticed this as a problem. I honestly didn't even remember this was a thing until this post, and I beat it 3 times for the achievements.
What reason is there to hoard your Money/exp. All soulslikes i know do encourage you to spent your currency asap.

counter point, level number better than crystal number
If you have an excess of crystals, buy Goods like Salt Bricks and Crystallised Disks from Kyen and then sell them back when you want to level up or buy stuff. Buying and selling prices with him are equalised on a 1:1 basis, so there's little reason not to if you're worried about losing crystals on death.
